Way to encourage public transport

:ranting:Well today apart from learning about the proposals to introduce congestion charges for public trains I have found out that the local bus service has hiked up their fares (while canceling routes due to one road having works on it). :rolleyes: Soon enough it's going to be cheaper (and much faster) for me to pay my petrol and parking in town than it is to get the suposidly 'environmentally friendly' and 'traffic reducing' bus in. Great gob chaps:thumbup::irked:
I have to make a 3 mile each way journey nowadays which equates to less than 1 litre of petrol in my (relatively thirsty) car, thats < 83.9p. On the bus it's £3.20 thats nearly 4 litres of fuel... Add to that the fact I waited about 10mins for the bus to arrive then it took about 30mins to get through the villages... I drive the 3miles in 5minutes.
So to recap, it cost be 4x as much, took 8x as long and during that 40mins was subjected to weirdo's, scary people & shocking driving.
Hmm, which do you think I'll be using in the future.

Nail, Head, Hit, Lois, In this country our traffic management is in a right mess. To put it simply, If we make transport by car expensive, what do you think the private buses, private train operators, and taxis are going to do? You don't need a Phd to work it out do you?
Yep! they will see the opportunity to raise their fares in line with motoring costs.
Hence this line of thinking by HM gov. is going to take us .........no-where.
The only other option?.................IMO, state owned buses and trains, with the fare price kept low, just like we used to have.

Eeee Lass, what are these "p" thingies? I used to go to school on the steam train and bus and it cost 2d 3/4! (Twopence threefarthing!!!(no joke) and Edinburgh had double decker trams!!!
Bring back the days of the saluting AA/RAC man on his motorbike and sidecar, conductors who were cheerful and helped old ladies onto and off the bus, where you coulld stow you bag under the stairs and if the bus was full as a capped and short trousered schoolboy you could still ride under the stairs!!! And weekends with picnics in the countryside in the Lanchester with a proper BIG picnic basket strapped onto the luggage rack!!!

It costs a bit more than this,depreciation,road tax,insurance etc. Still I agree that in most cases cars are cheaper than buses.
Not so... That's the mistake made by all the dicks at train companies who try and argue that their fares are comparable with the cost of the same journey by car when this is patently not the case, an invalid argument which really gets on my tits as I'm all for encouraging people to use public transport as long as it involves carrots and not sticks. (ETA: I'm not calling you a dick, just the train companies 
)
Insurance and tax are the same whether you drive 10 miles a year or 100,000; depreciation is mostly determined by the age of the car (and IMO is not a real cost anyway, but that's not really the point here), not so much by mileage. They are simply the price you pay for the privilege of being able to make journeys by car, irrespective of how many journeys you make. They don't figure in the cost of any particular individual journey... the cost of a journey is pretty much the cost of the petrol you use (plus stuff like M6 tolls and sandwiches from service stations which seem to have gold dust in if the price is anything to go by )
