Return of ex employers equipment
Discussion
Hi,
wonder if anyone can advise, I left my old job about 4 months ago and still have their laptop and monitor. I have contacted them a couple of times and just get a reply that someone will come and collect it (office is closed due to covid as far as I am aware). I'd perfer them to collect as the office is not that close, but happy to take it back to them if they can arrange for someone to meet me / give access to the office so that its left in a secure place.
Quite happy to hold onto it and keep it safe as its all boxed up but would sooner it was not taking up room in my flat, if they are not being forthcomming, despite my offering to return it do I remain liable for any damage etc.
How long should I give it before I assume that they are not interested in the retun of the kit (approx £2200)

I've just had a similar situation with one of my staff. He finished last week with us and our IT Department will be sending a courier round to his house to collect.
If I was in your position I'd email IT and cc your line manager and HR. The equipment "should" be on an Asset Register somewhere and a "competent" IT Department would want it back so it can be reallocated.

Never really, unless you want to be accused of thief. If is also your responsibility to ensure it doesn't get nicked or damaged. I would ring up the MD, higher up and advise situation. How long should I give it before I assume that they are not interested in the retun of the kit (approx £2200)

The MD and HR have never been bothered with the 'details' side of things, I did try to set up an asset tracking system but it was decided by my management that it was too resource intensive and costly to track all of the end-user assets, along with things like security and MFA (one of the many reasons I decided to leave)... only person left in the IT department is my old apprenticemacstorm73 said:

you make them aware so they get it sorted, surely you want to move on from the place, not have constant ties to it.macstorm73 said:

Even if they don't bother with the detail side of things they'll tell somebody else who does. No company willingly lets go of £2k worth of IT equipment.
On the other hand, if you're hoping to keep quiet and hope they forget about it so you get to keep the stuff I suppose you might get away with it......

Reminds me of a situation about 30 years ago.....the company I worked for had one person working in IT. before he left he decided to order two laptops (this was back when laptops were f'king expensive) and took them with him when he left, presumably assuming that nobody would notice. Somebody noticed and, after a couple of unproductive phone calls the MD sent round two large members of staff to recover the laptops. (It was a different time)

I've dropped them an email, its not my property so dont see why I should keep it. Its all boxed up so will be going into the loft until I hear back, just a pain that they have not told me where to send it to (office closed, no one there)OP - if you're genuinely wanting to return them then email MD and HR. Email them and say your a bit short on space and will be charging storage of 100 quid a day from X date. I think they'll soon pick it up.
That's a dick move. You'll always be remembered as the difficult bugger. Not the best of ideas.EarlofDrift said:

When I was given my one week notice back in April, I said, I wouldn't be driving 220 miles return trip to return said laptop, but if they sent me a delivery label I'd take it to a post office.
Not heard a thing.

About to be in the same situation. Finishing my role next Tuesday, off-hired the van, no one from the hire company is interested in collecting it, and I wonder if they care for their IT equipment. I wonder if it's because of Coronavirus people have been so absent minded?
Hire companies are weird. They'll just let it sit there till they need it, then come and get it. Often they don't have space for all the vehicles, so leave them places like this to buffer in and out as required!Pit Pony said:

When I got made redundant a few years back, I got sent a prepaid box to return my laptop in. I duly copied anything of interest to me off and put it in the box. Remembered something else, took it out and opened it to copy that off too, and found a line of dead pixels across the screen. When I was given my one week notice back in April, I said, I wouldn't be driving 220 miles return trip to return said laptop, but if they sent me a delivery label I'd take it to a post office.

This laptop had lived in a docking station all its life at home, and never been opened, except maybe 5 times. It was fine when I put it away 30 minutes previously, and I'd not even slammed the lid!
Just bloody inconvenient it had happened them. Fortunately no sign of visible damage or tampering...because I'd not damaged or tampered with it, but I still worried a little.
Nothing happened.
