SP30 - can't send licence...

Got a NIP, paid the fine but if i send my driving licence off within the 28 day limit, i won't be able to hire a car on upcoming holiday as it takes up to 3 weeks to be returned.

What are my options?

If you don't send your licence, you won't have complied with the terms of a Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty. This could result in the matter being proceeded to court.

Bearing in mind you can get a DVLA code to allow the hirer to confirm online the status of your licence, will they not accept a photocopy to be presented when you hire the car ?

The above assumes you did actually receive an offer of Fixed Penalty and didn't just send off £100 in response to the NIP.

I don't think you need the licence 'per-se', a photocopy should do for the hire company, because all they want to do is to a check for pending points etc which they will do when you hire.
I'd be more worried about not complying with Plod than I would be with Hertz or whoever.

The paper counterpart to a driving licence has had no legal status since 8 June 2015, so you cannot show this to the hire company to show points

as DVLA don't issue the counterpart anymore, the hire company will have to access the information via the sharing 'check code' , give them a ring to let them know, but don't miss out the chance to comply with the conditional ticket offer.

Though many hirers will still want to see the physical card licence of the main hiring driver (at least Alamo did for me last week in France) although I had pre-filled the forms online including driving licence numbers.

i had this quite recently - needed my uk licence with me overseas for all kinds of reasons.

spoke to the processing unit (dont recall the exact name of the department) and they accepted a copy of the licence with a covering note/letter. all went through without any issues

Use your passport as proof of ID and get an online claim code which is valid for 21 days to show them your licence.

I can confirm that with Hertz and Enterprise this is fine.
