£1200 hatchback help

Doing this for a friend he's after a hatchback to last him until not long after christmas.

Requirements are,
- £1200 budget
- hatchback
- petrol
- cheap to insure (26 years old)
- max 1.6L engine
- would consider 100k+ miles depending on history of the car

+1 as a current owner agree with this. The handling of these are on point, they are nippy as lightweight and cheap to maintain, quite easy to DIY on these cars too. If he can find the 1.8 I'd get that for the extra power but 1.6 would be fine too.

He’s got an Astra at the moment. Which has failed it’s MOT and gong to that scrapyard in the sky. I did mention a focus to him. But always says meh...

He should drive one..I did and still got it 10 years later. I can't speak to the Mk2 onwards by the MK1 is a great drive, I was converted!

Alfa 147. Cheap, nice to drive, nicer interior than some of the other options (albeit slightly squeaky). Going from experience, reliable too!

This, I had one recently and I absolutely fell for its charms, even though it was an abused unloved heap it drove brilliantly

Find one without rust if possible, great cars

Driver’s door has definitely been repsrayed or gifted from another car.

To my eyes, every panel on that car is a different shade. I didn't know there were so many variations on red.
