Yodel - local couriers?

This is a new one on me - apparently Yodel uses a network of freelance drivers to deliver smaller items who can only be contacted by mobile phone.
A package for me seems to be with one of these guys (has been since the beginning of the week) and each morning the delivery status changes to ‘out for delivery’ before updating to say ‘there has been a delay getting the parcel to you’ shortly after. It then inevitably doesn’t show up.
The live chat people insist each day that it’s out for delivery and that I need to contact the driver because they don’t have GPS.
Naturally the driver’s mobile is off and he doesn’t respond to texts.
Anyone else had an issue with this?
I’m assuming it’s a zero hours guy who has become overwhelmed and thrown his phone out the window and binned off the lot? Or can’t be arsed with us as it’s a bit rural and he’s busy. Or any one of a million things that probably u,it at Ely mean he won’t deliver...
Anyone know how to make some progress with tracking down stuff that’s with one of these local couriers?

Delighted it arrived eventually.

Sounds like Yodel are using the Hermes business model for small low value local deliveries - a part time mum or local guy using their own car to deliver.
If the geography/demographics are right it's a cushy job - for instance my local guy says he delivers to 5 large neigbouring estates that are relatively wealthy = lots of orders and are mums with small kids who are nearly always in. No horrible tower blocks etc.
Hermes pay these people 50p per drop and they have to do free collections, so if you have a bad area with lots of flats and people working, you end up with loads of re-deliveries and the courier will jack it in and dump the stuff.

A couple of years ago, I had a package delivered by a Yodel free lancer. The car he turned up in was a Ford Fiesta that looked like it was being held together by rust and tape.
And on the topic of dumping parcels, I know somebody who used to work for Royal Mail. One day he decided that he had enough of the job, and just chucked all of the letters that he was supposed to be delivering on that days route, in a bin and walked home.
