Re: the debacle @ Indy, combined with the lack of real
wheel-to-wheel racing:

If I were thje Czar of Motor Racing, the following
rules would take effect ASAP-

All wings larger than 12 Square inches per car are banned. ( this includes all aerodynamic devices .)
body shapes may not produce in excess of 150 lbs of total downforce @ 100 mph.
Manual gearboxes are mandatory, with foot operated
clutches-linkage to be either mechanical or hydraulic,
no computer interface allowed.
All tires to be reduced to contact patch no larger than used in F-1 1962-67.
Carbon and ceramic brakes are banned- all cars must use spec brake rotors, calipers, and pads.

Only fuel supplied by the governing body at a given race may be used in that race- no additives allowed.

That ought to get some real racing going! (or they could just forget the whole silly mess and put on something much more entertaining- SIDECAR RACES!!!

Or, indeed, we could just scrap F1 and force all drivers to drive Formula Ford or Formula First cars, because that's about the level the cars would be at with your proposed regultions.

One simple thing would sort out F1. The resignation of Max Mosely.

I don't like the luddite approach, F1 should be at the forefront of new technology, but I do wish the cars looked more like a Lotus 72 or McLaren M23

That exactly my thoughts. If you want close racing where the drivers make the difference then watch Formula Ford/3/renault. F1 has never been about all the cars being fair. Its about every part of the team and the car needing to be perfect for a team to win.

Or to make it realy interesting there should be 20 70s F1 car and before the race there is a names in hats draw to see who drives each car! And at the pit stops the drivers have change there own tyres! That would be good entertainment.

what if F1 used the same rules and cars as the CART / IRL (or whatever), and they could compete in the Indy 500 as well

imo, this would be the end of F1. its supposed to be the top level of motorsport, that includes the technical side. so making it a spec race series, you would need to pass the same rules or the likes on to every other series. take it back to the stone ages.
i for one would'nt want to watch that.

Anyone know much about A1 racing? Seems to be a decent showing, and will probably be more entertaining than F1. It just needs a few years to get the top drivers interested.

A1 will have some good racing but all the cars are the same, so no real team rivalry. The way I see it will end up is lots of rich blokes from the Middle East buying them for weekend toys, this is the way they seem to be pushing it.

You buy a 'race seat' and the car gets brought to all the races for you but as the seat holder you have to arrange all the trackside mechanics and sponsors. Its marketed as a busy opportunity.

Well it can't be worse than F1 is at the moment, and it doesn't look like changing! I wish they'd just give the engineers a bit more leaway to come up with different things.
