Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI PD BXE

A really nice 2008 Škoda Octavia 1.9 tdi Estate as come up for sale locally. It’s a 2 owner car with full dealer service history and has covered 70k. It’s very clean and has been looked after.

I’ve read lots of horror stories online about the late BXE code PD engines, I was just wondering if this is a case of it being blown up online or should I run a mile?

I have read the horror stories, but the car has gone 12 years without a problem. Is it really likely to destroy itself as soon as I buy it?

I’ve had a few VAG 1.9tdi units over the years and I wouldn’t touch a BXE. It’s more of a case of when, not if..

Interesting, I missed the BXE problem was contemplating replacing our ageing Fabia Estate 1.9tdi
with a newer version or a Roomster 1.9tdi as a daily hack. Had thought the PDI engines were rock
solid ??

They pretty much are. It’s just a particular batch with BXE engine codes had a habit of putting con rods through the block with no warning.
If you google 1.9tdi BXE there will be a date window that they were made. I’m pretty sure all the BXE engines will be getting on a bit now (or on the scrap heap).

The con rod exiting the block thing happened to me in an '08 Golf at 103k miles. Shame as it was my first car and had been rock solid up until that point.

We are thinking about a roomster or fabia 1.9tdi of 2010 vintage, hope to avoid the problem engine.
Our current hack now has 220,000 miles up and still runs sweet as, but looks about as bad as a car could
