Okay, so i have had my chim for over a year now, but when i was looking to buy, i went all over the place, i went to see a chap called Tony Gilbert (aka Tony Gilbert Cars) he was a very nice man, He told me that many Chim' Speedo's fail at the magic number of 29,999 miles, this was the explanation given when i asked why the speedo in a particular Chim i was viewing had been replaced, thus showing a low milage.
I didnt actually buy from him, and finally got my Chim from Adrian Blyth.
I Havent seen this speedo issue mentioned since... Was this factoid true or just bulls**t?
Have a percentage of speedos failed at 29,999 miles?

Yep, not uncommon - although 29,999 is no different from any other number ending in 999. The ten thousands seem a bit worse than the thousands, but mine has usually fixed itself overnight. On one occasion it didn't, though, and I had to keep track of distance by hand until I got it fixed and wound on at the next service.
The first thing I noticed after driving my new Chim home from Nottingham to Oakham was that I had only covered 7 miles 
I thought "I know they're fast but didn't realise they could distort the space time continium!".
Later learned it was the mile-ometer intermittently failing. The speedo was fine though.

hmmm, worrying and important fact for anyone thinking of buying... one of the cars we wnet to look at in a private dealership in luton quoted only 16,000 miles, when we got there the car was a complete dog, and had obviously covered many more miles... probably 116,000
My odometer is still working fine at 47,000, so looking at the replies, it would seem to be part true and part BS. My speedo bit works ok after 18mph, but I have nothing below that currently (see separate topic on this gassing station).
Apparently there is a company called Speedy Cables who can rebuild speedos - you should be able to find them on the net somewhere. Good luck.

Search "speedo" on just the Chim forums , over the years this has been debated more than once or twice.
Frankly , most owners wont admit - on a public forum - that the're car has lost ,maybe 500 ,50000 etc miles , understandably , but it does happen.
Lets start a more positive thread about the passion we have for our Chims .

we LOVE em ... we could all just sell and get M3's and 911 's But that would be just copping out

Deffo not BS in the case of my old Griff. It was on it's 3rd speedo when I aquired it, and stuck for a while on both 19,999 and 29,999. It kicked in again of it's own accord - this may have been down to advice I'd had at the time to bring it up to a 'decent' speed(
), or the mechanism might just have decided to play ball again...Ours stopped at 29,999.5. Tried all the suggested methods to cure it and in the end took the dash off and tapped the back with a toffee hammer. When it had gone round to 30k went for a gentle drivespin (Mrs FFG was holding the dash - good job I didn't make a spelling bufon there) and it went to 30,001 and the trip also started to go. Dash back together and hey presto.
Now at 32xxx the whole lot has packed up including the speedo which did work last time it stopped. This is the next thing to sort out.
