I am having a problem attaching a file to an email
When I click on "choose a file " I get a blue screen error.
I can attach the file by "drag&drop" ok.
I have tried Recovery but no luck
The computer appeares to be working OK apart from this ,The only change I have noticed is that it used to swith off if I had not used it for two hours but now stays on all the time.
Any thoughts on curing the problem ?

Initial thoughts are a hardware issue - maybe post a picture of the BSOD when it next happens?

I would also think about upgrading to Win10 as Win7 is now more vulnerable due to no security patches being released.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/2764302/0...

"This issue occurs because of an NTFS file system memory leak issue. Specifically, when an application opens a file that has an oplock on it for modification in a transaction, NTFS will break the oplock and will leak nonpaged pool memory. This causes excessive memory usage and memory allocation failures."

But the hotfix is no longer available, when you click on the update available link it suggests you upgrade to Windows 10.

That's an 8 year old fix.

Unless the OP has truly failed to keep the Windows installation up to date, I'd be surprised if that patch hasn't already been applied.

OP, go to Control Panel, Windows Updates, and check if you have KB2764302 installed.

EDIT: I would say the OP has faulty memory.

Just checked the computer and there is no KB2764302 installed .I also checked the laptop I bought at the same time and that is also missing KB2764302
Is it possible to get it from a web site?

I just checked my own Windows 7 PC and I don't have that update either.

I have a couple of others built from the same image so they won't have that update.

How much memory (RAM) does you PC have, and what is it made up of? e.g. 8GB from 2x 4GB sticks etc.

If you have enough, you might be able to try removing some memory and testing as a process of trial and error.

I suggested memory, because a couple of sites I found suggested that the error you have could be a memory issue - and if the PC is old....

Even removing and reseating it might fix it.

That doesn't sound right, normally it would be in banks of 2 or 4 etc

If you are not able to open up the case and perform the tasks it might be better to take it to a local IT company type thing.

If it's an older machine, 3GB is feasible, but less than ideal from a performance point of view.

Agreed, this is probably the best course of action the OP could take.

It would either be a 4gb stick or 2x 2gb sticks but the OS only recognises 3GB. Right click My Computer then properties then system and you should see the installed memory and the usable memory.

Chances are the RAM is shot though, you could grab some sticks of eBay but it sounds like a very old PC, myabe see if you can stick Win10 on, otherwise time for an upgrade.

This is what I would do if you want to keep it:

Stick the maximum of 8 Gb Ram in it
Install an SSD
Install Win10

If not, time to purchase a new one - Dell Outlet is your friend.

I know nothing much about computers but every time I've had a blue screen issue, a new PSU was the answer.

Surprisingly easy to get in case.
Two sticks
Kingston 1GB 1R8 PC3 10600U-9-10-AO
Kingston 2GB 2RX8 PC3 10600 U-9-10BO
Which do I up grade?
Whilst I had the case open I got rid of the spiders and dust!
Got a scare when I switched it back on. Black screen telling me I had been a naughty boy for going in the case .
Pressed F1 back to as it was before.
Learned quit a lot this morning thanks gentlemen.

I would remove and reseat each stick and see if that fixes the issue.

They require quite a firm press to reseat them - there are clips on either end to release them (some machines only have a single clip).

The ram also only goes in one way.

If reseating them doesn't solve the issue, then I would remove one and try again. Windows 7 will boot with only 1GB RAM.

Removed 1GB memory stick booted up same problem.
Replaced 1GB memory, removed 2GB memory stick booted up same problem
Replace both sticks?

I'd be very surprised if both sticks were faulty.

We're into the realms of guesswork now really, as the main culprits appear to have been eliminated.

It's unlikely to be a CPU issue I think.

Are you running any third party A/V software? (grasping at straws here)
