AUC M2 - Long Distance Purchase
Discussion
I've placed a 'holding deposit' of £100 on an AUC mineral grey, manual M2 LCI which is located 350 miles (6 hour drive) away from me. The dealership have since removed the adverts for the car on the AUC website and AutoTrader, we've agreed on a price for the car, a P/X value for my car and the finance figures for the remainder...
The plan is to receive a live video walk-around of the car at some point today. If all looks well, the plan is to finalise the deal over the phone and start the finance application. Then the car will be delivered to me via trailer, I'll get a chance to inspect it in person before signing off on it and they'll take my car back with them...
I guess what I'm asking is... Has anybody else done this before? Anything in particular I should watch out for? How do we exchange V5's etc? There seems to be a lot of trust involved for both parties and not something I've done before!

Not done, but seems straightforward and you've a lot of protection when buying online. The plan is to receive a live video walk-around of the car at some point today. Re: the V5 on the OG M2, I reckon you'll get the green new keeper's slip (just as you would in the showroom) and a fresh V5 be along soon.
You just fill in the trading a car section on your V5. Maybe the delivery driver driver puts it in car?
Besides the walk thru video, I'd ask for the AUC checks report, that'll show what was needed on car when they took it in. AUC are usually good, but I've seen a few threads where some consumables weren't replace as they should be. These were purchases made some distance from the buyer's home, so not that dissimilar to you.
You'll have minimum of 12 months warranty so any problems can be dealt with locally, but it's worth getting AUC checks report and the AUC warranty doesn't cover everything. Wheels for example.
Nice color, enjoy your new car

- From AA**
If you buy online, your rights will depend on who the seller is.
Buying online from a dealer you have the same rights as you would if you walked into the dealership and bought face to face.
The same applies if you buy from a dealer on a 'buy it now' basis using an online auction site.
On 13 June 2014 The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation, and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 replaced the Distance Selling Regulations and gives you key cancellation rights when you enter into contracts at a distance.
You have a right to cancel from the moment you place your order until 14 days from the day you receive your goods.
Having decided to cancel within 14 days you then have 14 days to actually return the goods.
You should get a refund within 14 days of the dealer getting the car back.

Thanks for the reply, me neither - I did get a former car delivered to a local branch once before and that was straightforward enough but definitely not the same!Re: the V5 on the OG M2, I reckon you'll get the green new keeper's slip (just as you would in the showroom) and a fresh V5 be along soon.

Yeah that makes sense to be fair, I guess I'm just getting a bit flustered as I haven't seen/driven the car before. But, I do have an M235i currently so I'm not expecting any massive difference, apart from the gearbox and refreshed dials/iDrive. I'd much prefer to view in person but there are literally no other AUC manual LCI's out there anymore! There was a couple at the time and this one was head and shoulders above the rest... I guess I've just got to stop second guessing myself and go with it!
Good point regarding the AUC report, I'll definitely ask for that. I'm keen to see the service history/up-coming service date and the tyres (brand/condition).
If there's any niggles with the above I'll ask for them to be resolved and maybe throw in Apple CarPlay

OG M2 much better car than M 235i
I’d expect on a LCI ,for servicing:- the RIS , 1st oil service (due 2 years from build date) and brake fluid if it’s 3 years old.
Obviously if higher miles , or 4 years , the second and bigger oil service.
AUC Standard mean dealer must service if due within 4 k or 4 months (reduces to 3 and 3 if car has service pack)
They can sell at 3mm tread, but I’d want 5mm minimum on a M.

Oh you are in for a treat..................I've owned both a M235i and an OG M2 - the M235i is a very nice car, but the M2 is a stunning car to drive, it fixes most things wrong with the M235i and some. The noise of the M2 is outrageous.

It's a Nov 2017 car so I'm hoping the RIS was done on time (I imagine it was as it's AUC) and it's had a minor. Hoping the brake fluid is due <4 months so it's done by them before I get it then! No big deal if not, just annoying as I've literally just had minor/brake fluid on my M235i!I’d expect on a LCI ,for servicing:- the RIS , 1st oil service (due 2 years from build date) and brake fluid if it’s 3 years old.

Yeah I'm thinking along the same lines regarding tyres. I rushed in to my current M235i and it was due a major service 5 months later and needed tyres after a couple of months, trying to be more level headed going in to this one!

That's good to hear! Did you have a manual or a DCT? The noise of the M2 is outrageous.
I'm going with manual on blind faith, from what I've read it's similar to other BMW's in that it's rubbery and not the most precise but suites the car more. I'm itching to get back in a manual, as good as the ZF is in my M235i...
Yeah, even without the M Performance exhaust they sound noice - No doubt I'll be lurking for a used MPE on the forums though

No need to have a lot of extra trust when dealing with a main dealer, they aren't exactly gonna scam you

Glad to hear it went smoothly, everyone I've spoken to has largely said the same thing...No need to have a lot of extra trust when dealing with a main dealer, they aren't exactly gonna scam you

That's true regarding the main dealer aspect, I'm just paranoid they'll pick some fault with my P/X, it gets damaged in transport or that there's just a plethora of small imperfections which can't be picked up over video (i.e. bad paint swirls/orange peel, small scratches, leather wear on the interior).
I know I'm probably being pedantic now - I think just typing that out has helped me realise that

How do you know AUC standard says it's got to be serviced if due within 4 months? I can only find that it says 'if a service is due it'llbe carried out before delivery'. I’d expect on a LCI ,for servicing:- the RIS , 1st oil service (due 2 years from build date) and brake fluid if it’s 3 years old.

Maybe just a little pedantic

But yes, if you're really concerned I would just take a good HD video in the sun with a 1080p or 4k camera (mobile phones usually can do this) and likewise, plenty of pictures of the inside, seat bolsters , corners of bumpers and such.
I found a couple of small damages up on my Dads car, but nothing major.
- Small wear patch on drivers side seat bolster (not what I'd expect on a 20,000 mile car)
- Reasonably large "chip" on one alloy
- Drivers side mirror doesn't properly adjust (seems to get stuck).
None of these are major issues and all can be resolved by either supplying dealer providing some money or approaching the local dealer and having them resolve.
Likewise the ideal situation would be that the delivery driver when dropping your new car off, also takes your old car and inspects that, so you can be both be happy.

There's some tolerance over 1.2k miles but agree with an AUC it has to have been done and should be done on or around schedule. Yeah I'm thinking along the same lines regarding tyres. They should do brake fluid. If you mean Nov 17 registered then it's within 4 months and it may have been built a little earlier.
Manual is a little rubbery, but it's a nice light clutch and certainly easier to use than my E46 M3.
I enjoyed my DCT drive too, maybe more as that car's seats had lumbar.
But manual is more fun in a fun car. So the right choice.
I've done a similar thing, m2 lci manual from M140i auto. Although the dealer is a mere 230 miles away. I didn't trade in our car with them as they offered a laughable amount, so that's gone to Arnold Ckarke yesterday. Easy enough transaction but pretty much no Covid cautiousness!
The M2 is getting delivered tomorrow so we'll see what happens! They are using a delivery company to drive it up.
The dealer has completed the registration into our name for us and will send the green slip. They've sent a photocopy so we could get it taxed today.
Had similar thoughts as you but now I'm just looking forward to getting it and hoping I don't have any hassle.

I'm half expecting some minor imperfections and I don't mind resolving them with my local dealership under the AUC warranty or from my own pocket, so long as it's not significant! Yeah, I'm hoping the delivery driver checks over my car/documents etc just for piece of mind, not entirely clear on how that process works so I'll look to clarify.

That's my understanding too, with some luck I might get it without needing a service/brake fluid for the foreseeable! They should do brake fluid. If you mean Nov 17 registered then it's within 4 months and it may have been built a little earlier.

Sounds promising, I've got lumbar on my M235i and I really rate it. I'm not sure whether or not this M2 has it, awaiting the full spec sheet from the salesman so fingers crossed, not sure it will be a deal breaker for me though *famous last words*.
