Doesn't anyone else think it's outrageous that the IWM of all people are promoting the myth that Mrs Thatcher responded to the sinking of the Belgrano by saying "Rejoice Rejoice"?
Well I saw fake quotes attributed to Conservative politicians the other day on social media, except I had to perform that fact check for the poster, while such organisations I'd imagine pay people for that role.I don't think they're promoting anything. It's an item of art in their collection relating to the Falklands war which is representative of an artists thinking of the time.
That's a bit like saying the Uffizi Gallery is promoting standing around in shells

Label'Rejoice, Rejoice' takes its title from Margaret Thatcher's statement to the media on hearing that the island of South Georgia had been recaptured during the Falklands War. The imagery used in this diptych is in sharp contrast to its celebratory title, emphasised by the sinister phrase 'next of kin will be informed'. The arrangement of disembodied limbs in the first part of the work [Art.IWM ART 15654 1] questions the human cost of warfare. The second part [Art.IWM ART 15654 2] shows a configuration of cables and photographic film, highlighting the interrelationship between communications, war and the media, an association which was becoming increasingly evident in that period. The work references the geometry of the Union Jack and, draped in red white and blue ribbon, it questions what is done and what is lost in the name of nationalism and heroism. This work is a precursor to Peel's 'Modern World' series, also in IWM's collection, which later developed many of these ideas in the context of more recent conflicts.

The item is called 'Rejoice Rejoice and the description reads
"The title relates to a remark made by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher when questioned by the British press on the sinking of the Argentinian battleship 'General Belgrano' during the Falklands conflict."
You missed out the bit that says "Show More", as Riley correctly quotes for you above. "The title relates to a remark made by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher when questioned by the British press on the sinking of the Argentinian battleship 'General Belgrano' during the Falklands conflict."
A little misleading, but once you click and spend the extra 30 seconds reading the full label, it all makes sense.
