Discovery sport...or not?
Discussion
Looking at a new car for the wife, the budget started at £17k but has crept up to £22k (somehow)
We've arrived in discovery sport territory, having worked out the early 2.2 engines aren't euro6 and so will no doubt be banned from cities before the euro6 ones I'm now left with the reliability stories.
I hadn't read much before seeing a car up which failed an MOT 2 years previous over excessive oil in the exhaust, the issue seems to have been fixed on the day given the not and a subsequent not by a different garage last year looks clear. However I then read up on the various dpf and exhaust issues and I'm now scared... I've always bought petrol, it's going to be used primarily for shorter local journeys and then the holidays. I can't help feeling a petrol would be more reliable.
That said there's not many cars that sit comfortably under £25k with under 40,000 miles and a high end look. We did sort of fancy a jeep grand Cherokee but they roll a bit, don't have 7 seats and aren't much above landrover in the reliability tables..

How far off an X5 with 7 seats under 40k does £25k get you?
The X5 is doable, however despite the reviews we felt the the DS had more space then th x5 on th second row as well as the third row. The 7 seats are nice but if they're not practical then they're unrequited. Ultimately it'll be my wife or I squeezed into them very rarely. The kids are too young and the other seats would be for grandparents. So we liked the DS as the third row felt practical Vs the X5 which looked big but felt smallNo. I have a last of the line Freelander, and was given a Discovery Sport as a hire car through work for a couple of weeks. It was a top end early one, and it truly wasn’t as nice as the Freelander (it just ‘felt’ a lot lower quality), plus the oil/fuel mix problem is well known. Your driving pattern is crying out for this to happen. If you want one, get a petrol one.
I acknowledge my ownership of a Freelander will affect my views!

I'm looking at this budget when the current lease goes back in October, currently have a 7 seat 5008 SUV but 3rd row has been used a handful of times over 3 years, room is good though and with 3 kids need a decent size car for the wife (my 3 series is terrible).
DS was on my list but could only get high mileage early ones, wife likes the Kuga but I've narrowed it down to:
Ford edge
Hyundai Santa Fe
Edge hasn't got 7 seats but does have lots of room

hmm, id rather a £17k Disco 4 (going to be double the 40k miles criteria though) and keep the £5k for running repairs. You may not use it all, and I bet it would be better on depreciation too.
My mate has high spec 7 seat Skoda Kodiaq and its really very nice.

I would go for an XC90.
Yes you'll struggle to get one with less than 40k miles but they take the mileage very well so that wouldn't bother me.
This is the only new shape one with 40k or less.

A few around 40-70k miles.

I’d avoid the Disco Sport to be honest. We had a few of them when the wife’s Evoque was in for warranty work, sometimes we’d have them for weeks so I had a good drive in them. The just felt a bit low rent compared to the Evoque and the nav and entertaining screen wasn’t up to much. The 2.2 engine is more reliable than the newer one, which I’d avoid unless you get one with a water tight warranty.

Worrying thread to read on reliability when I have new DS PHEV on order lol. Anyway the warranty means it will be back at LR in a shot for any problems and I will be asking for Range Rover Sport as a courtesy vehicle!!
The trouble was with the wife’s car, something would go wrong every 3 or 4 months (no exaggeration) so she’d get the local dealer to pick the car up and drop off a courtesy car, the dealer would take anything up to a week to diagnose the fault, she’d then get the broken car back and then wait anything up to a month for it to go back in to be fixed. Which then took another couple of weeks.I pointed out to the dealer that the ‘In-control’ app tells me if the car has moved or if it’s sat for days without being looked at after they received it, they didn’t care, worked within their own timescale.
If you’re happy to expect the inconvenience of this, buy a Land Rover, personally I’d never waste my money on another one but I think hers was exceptionally bad.
I hope you get a good one!
Well it sounds like it's out! We want something reliable to hold onto and while it ticks the missus luxury boxes it seems there's a high chance of breakage. Apparently there are 1.3 faults per vehicle which is hardly confidence boosting especially when we're not buying new.
As said the 7 seats isn't a must but a nice of practical. Well look at the Skoda kodiaq, seat terrano and maybe the XC60 I think the xc90s me that be a little out of budget.
Shame about the landrovers they look so nice

Ignore the badge (as my OH did) and you'll find a damn good car in the Skoda Kodiaq.
My wifes boss has a Discovery Sport and its a courtesy car that you see more often then the Discovery in the car park
This. We tested both the Disco Sport and Kodiaq. Ignore the badge and the Kodiaq is the better car. Even with the back row of seats in use you still have boot space. In the DS you don't even have a place to store the parcel shelf. My wifes boss has a Discovery Sport and its a courtesy car that you see more often then the Discovery in the car park

Hope so too! As i said if there are issues they better have a nice fleet of courtesy ones for me to use. I remember my Mercedes CLA had a fault and it took 3 weeks to sort. In that I was given a E-Class Coupe - I didn't complain!I pointed out to the dealer that the ‘In-control’ app tells me if the car has moved or if it’s sat for days without being looked at after they received it, they didn’t care, worked within their own timescale.

This is really surprising for me. I own a discovery sport and had always assumed it wasn’t even comparable to the freelander and was a paradigm shift in terms of quality and position within the Landrover range. I’ve not even seen inside a freelander as I thought it wouldn’t compare. Good to know now. I acknowledge my ownership of a Freelander will affect my views!
There are lots of issues reported about the discovery sport. Mines been faultless and one of the best all round cars I’ve owned. It served as a funeral car for seven of us last week at my mom’s funeral, done 1000 miles in 2 days to south of France in total comfort and a genuine 37mpg at just over french autoroute speeds. I can even commend its off road abilities. I genuinely rate ours.
Unfortunately we’ve had a Low coolant warning this week. I’m concerned given the reports of coolant in diesel problems with the enginium engine. The system’s been pressure tested and reported cheerily by the mechanic via a very impressive full video report as leak free. This has only made me more concerned. It has plenty of warranty left so I need to not worry and be pragmatic about it. Ultimately, this car has had fewer warranty works carried out than any other new car I’ve owned.
