Have Windows Enterprise 10 on company laptop. A Lenovo Thinkpad.

For the past month, the system decides of its own accord, to decide that it will set as default, Microsoft Edge will be the default app for .pdf files.

I set the default app to be Adobe Reader - and within a few days, it reverts to Microsoft Edge again.

Any suggestions?

It's driving me fking mad.

Your IT dept is probably setting it. Speak to them.

Yeh got the same, my company now pays extra support for Windows 7, we have software that wasn't supported in XP.

During Covid rolled out quickly Windows 10 and it does what it wants.

I use Linux at home so I'm like wtf.

You know what that filthy Windows will not let me do? Remote Desktop or mouse without borders. Piece of st Microsoft. So bloated with garbage and they can’t even do simple stuff.

Without trying to sound too harsh (almost certainly too late), this thread sounds like another “Windows is doing exactly what someone has told it to and it’s all Microsoft’s fault.”

The thread title should be “IT policy on company laptop sets default program to avoid numpties downloading a vulnerable/Trojan piece of software”

But, that’s both too long a title and the only response would be

“Oh”

Windows getting a hard time is old hat in a lot of tech companies because Mac is now just silly priced and Windows is not as bad as people would have you believe. This may change with apples new processors but I think that highly unlikely. It’s going to be even more expensive so you can take advantage of some exclusive feature that probably isn’t exclusive.

If we were talking about servers running applications I would be first to stand up and ask if you were mad for not using Linux. But, in terms of productivity I see the majority on Windows and those on Mac use office programs!

Anyway, this wasn’t Mac vs Windows but I think my second paragraph stayed almost stayed on topic.

This.

Maybe they want you to use Edge for opening PDFs? Or rather they don't want other apps doing it.

Ha, I even went on to explain why the first paragraph made no sense.

The two examples I gave are real and as a result I don’t use my laptop. Instead, I use a workspace which I log in to through my home PC so I can use multiple monitors. The irony being, due to the differing permissions, it’s less locked down.

It amazes me how people ask on forums about issues with their company IT equipment or policy.
Then expect some secret hack they can do to bypass security or get one over the IT dept.

Just speak to them, most IT Dept techies love to solve problems and make life easier. Its the bloody managers you want to watch out for..... lol
