Lens for a Safari
Discussion
Hi,
I went there in March this year (effin' loved it to!
)... anyway, I had an 18-70mm and a 70-300mm (on dSLR so 1.5x cropping factor).
I have to say that I pretty much only used the telephoto (except for bigguns like Giraffes). It depends on the shots you want to take... If you want dramatic close-ups that you can blow up etc you'll possibly want better than the 300 (tele-converter?).
I took this one @ 300mm and then cropped it significantly.
It's fine up to A3 but wouldn't go beyond that. Uncropped it would, however.
Also, camera shake was a real problem (due to my inexperience) especially as I was at 300mm. Make sure you use the window of the jeep to steady your camera - use a jumper/blanket hung over the window to protect your camera/lens.
Let me know if you want any further information - I'll have more of a think too.
Cheers,
Phil

Slightly more seriously, I'm thinking something along the lines of a Sigma (HSM and all that) around the 70-200 range with a teleconverter...
...or....
...one of those amazing 50-500 jobbies? Got to be easy for travelling with (unless you were particularly thinking of a 400 f2.8 and TC 17....
First thought anyway.

You'll need the wideangle for when the lion obligingly hops onto the bonnet of your landie and poses there for you ! I had a 70-210 when I went there many years ago and found that was too short for real wildlife. That and the fact that I was working 6 days a week in Nairobi really limited my chances of getting the good stuff.
N.B. There are millions of birds out there too, small and large. Throw a handful of breadcrumbs out of your window and you'll get 3 dozen tiny ones land in a space of couple of square feet.

I am going to Kenya on Safari in Feb. What lenses would you suggest?
What's your budget? You've got a Canon 20D yes?
Yes a 20D. At moment I have a 24-70L so will add to that. Prob going to get a 10-22 for wide stuff but just want to make sure the long lens I get will be long enough
