Single Player Only. Is it worth getting a console?
Discussion
Haven't gamed for years and never really got on with online due to being very poor online player.
Is it worth getting a console and if so are there any good single player games (any genre) and which console has the best SP games?
Would I be better looking at something that can play back catalogue of games when SP was more prevalent?
Not interested in Nintendo
TIA

PS4 you get most of the games that are released on Xbox and then on top there's loads of exclusives.
Horizon zero dawn is one of the best single player games you will most likely play.
You can buy ps plus for between £20-30 quid for the year which gives you a few free games a month which normally consist of a AAA game and then a few independent games some of which are really good.
Most games are single player and will have an online element tacked on if you wish to play it.

I would say yes. You can play FarCry, Fallout, Skyrim - all three games will be 50 hours plus of gameplay time (Skyrim and Fallout you could spend well over 100 hours on if you had all the DLC and wanted to).
And at some stage you may decide to go back online (it can be fun with friends with Mics etc - just don't take it seriously)

You won't find much difference between the consoles to be honest.
I only ever played 1 player games too when i had mine, Never touched online really.
Only thing i would recommend is to get a external hard drive if you can afford one, the disk space on the consoles gets filled pretty quick

PlayStation has the better exclusives, God of War, The Last of Us (both of them), Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, Days Gone to name a few.
However, the Xbox is bloody good value if you get the console and Game Pass - https://www.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-game-pass/games# The Witcher 3 is a standout amongst those, as is The Outer Worlds and Red Dead Redemption 2.
I am lucky to have both options, so I'd be hard pushed to recommend one over the other. I'd lean slightly more towards the PlayStation, as they offer the better single player games.

I would suggest the PS4 has the better selection of single player exclusives as has been covered above.
Really until lockdown I hadn't played online at all other than with a couple of friends for Red Dead Redemption 2, but if there are 1 or 2 of your friends that either have a console or could be convinced to get one, it does add a different perspective to gaming, the game is very much just the activity you meet up over for a chat etc.

I only play single player and mainly on console now but I won't get into the Xbox vs. PS debate. I would suggest you might want to hold off as they are releasing the new generation consoles this year (PS5 or XBoxX) and although they'll be expensive compared to current prices, I can't see them releasing new games for the old models afterwards...
Apparently the practice of now charging all Xbox and PS players to play online is fine, accepted and just what happens. Yes you get games etc, but only for a month and not many of them are that good really. in my experience.
I have never understood this, it is basically a tax for being "allowed" to play online and just rake in a phenomenal amount of money.
Where PC players have no such issues often playing the exact same games.
I guess console players are just easier to roll over sadly.

Interesting topic.
I've just sold my ancient PS3 and was looking at buying something new purely to play single player.
I tried online a few years ago, but to be honest, it seemed to be mostly 13 year old kids getting really angry and telling other players they hoped their entire family dies of cancer and suchlike.
I think I'm going to wait for the PS5 this winter and play GTAV all the way through again plus maybe stuff like Red Dead Redemption 2.

That's not exactly an exclusive, is it?Horizon zero dawn is one of the best single player games you will most likely play.
If short term cost is not an issue (i.e. inital outlay for a half decent one), I'd recommend a PC just for the immense gaming catalogue, plus you don't get charged everytime you want to play online.

I will say exclusives on release then.
PC is another good option as well for the reasons stated above.
All the options are going to have their good points and bad.
OP there are plenty of great single player games across all platforms, decide on whether you want to go the console route and PC route and then the type of games you would like to play and see which offers you the best options and value for money.
Even if you bought any 3 of the games suggested by other posters above there's 100+s of hours of gameplay to last you well over a year if you only manage a few hours here and there to game.
xbox game pass includes pc games as well.
Xbox have got it pretty sown up really, nobody else can compete with this.
list is here.
i bought a no cd xbox s and game pass ultimate for a year for 160 quid. Added another hdd for 40 quid, so 200 all , nothing can meet that value.

I changed from descent spec gaming PC to console a few years ago, and love it.
I eventually got tired chasing upgrades, driver and compatibility issues, and always looking for the next upgrade. Heck, an average graphics card alone is the same price as an Xbox.
It's also far nicer sitting on my sofa with the big TV knowing that the game will just work, and its not going to suddenly require a update, etc.
The PC vs Console debate is huge. There is no 'right' answer, just what fits with your expectations.
BTW, I primarily play single player games, and couldn't be happier.
(I have both PS4 and Xbox One X - I use the Xbox far more due to Game Pass)

Thanks for the great replies. Money is t the issue so could wait until the new consoles come out. From memory I recall that Xbox has backward compatibility over the PS. Is this still the case.
Think I’m coming down on side of a console (prob Xbox). I used to play games like Half life on keyboard and mouse. God knows how I managed it!
Thanks again for the input. Need to have a look at the latest consoles coming out to see if that’s the route.

You don't just get the games for a month, either, and often have big titles available.

even if i paid full price for xbox live(never have) it would take me 10 plus years to be the same cost as a gaming rig.You don't just get the games for a month, either, and often have big titles available.
i used to have gaming pcs but they last a few years at best then struggle with newer games, no issues on the console.
