I've just got my MGB back on the road after a full resto and rebuild. It's all gone rather well, but for a slight niggle. When coming off the power, most noticeably in 3rd, there's a small but noticable tug to the right. It's not huge, not a problem, just a bit annoying.
There's nothing when going on the power, and no other odd steering happenings that I've noticed.

So my question is, what sort of thing can or could cause that? Where should I start looking? My thinking is that it's perhaps to do with the torque of the engine twisting to the passenger side against its mounts, then suddenly stopping and spring back the other way causing a weight shift? Or that the axle is yawing slightly under power and releasing...but that's just guesswork really.

More info about the car in case it helps:
- suspension lowered ~ 2 inches with uprated dampers and springs
- panhard rod added
- new proflex bushings everywhere
- removed rear anti roll bar and left the front one in (which seems to be the done thing when lowering)
- engine is tuned, so a bit more powerful than stock, on paper it might be something like 110-120 hp max so hardly likely to be twisting anything too far out of spec!

Assuming you've used lowering blocks on the rear, I'd carefully check the U bolts for tightness and that the spigots on the springs/blocks are properly located.

Are the springs new? A cracked spring would also cause this.

Check for binding brakes, could just be enough to give some drag, especially if car has been unused for some time.

All new springs, brakes all rebuilt with new pads and shoes and disks, and no binding, so it's not any of that. Will check the spring connections, thanks both smile

Not to worry, it's probably just some safety critical component not secured properly.

In case you're in any doubt, you should treat this as a safety critical issue until proven otherwise. Either the suspension or steering is faulty, and until you know the nature of the fault you must assume the worst.

I assume you'd let the vehicle settle & the suspension take up its normal running position before tightening up the fasteners?

Is the panhard rod sitting reasonably level to the axle?

I've had a good check over it all and my prime suspect is that the ubolts on one side seemed quite loose (they're nylocs so not "loose" as in "coming off", but not compressing the bushings very much). So I've nipped that up and will give it a brief test run to see. It's on the other side to the panhard rod attachment so it kinda makes sense that there might be a bit of leverage making that side move around.

If it's not that, my next guess will be the front dampers; I replaced one as it had started to leak so it's possible that they are mismatched, though they shouldn't be. They were both virtually new recon units, before I started on the restoration, otherwise I'd have replaced both.

I had very severe pulling when I got my MX5, pulled left under power and right when braking (or poss vice-versa, it was a while ago). Turned out to be the wheels - swapped to a different set and the problem vanished.

So for completeness..
Did a test run tonight and it's all good...it was indeed the ubolts not being tight enough. Oakdale had it on the first reply. I'm happy with that because it's about the easiest thing it could possibly be.
Thanks all for the replies. smile
