I've had a new Corolla for a day, a couple of times.
There isn't much space inside - some people think even the old model Yaris, from a smaller category, has better interior space.
The Corolla is also a lot lower to the ground than the previous Auris, I found the seating position quite uncomfortable unless you pumped the seat height right up.

You could consider the Corolla saloon same longer wheel base as the estate ( more leg room ) but for the price of hatch. Not made in this country though .
The Jazz will be more practical , If they are doing motorway driving I would go for the Corolla poping to the shops the Jazz will be ideal .

Thought I'd comment on this one. Had my Corolla Touring for a month now - it's the more powerful 2.0 hybrid in the excel spec with Pan roof.
Coming from a 3 series/ Focus ST estate then most recently a 190 S-Line Avant I knew it would be different but I'm getting older and have a family so needs must.
It's an extremely good all round car, handles OK, decent trim and very smooth to drive. It looks quite good, mines Manhattan Grey with contrasting black gloss - you wouldn't think it's an old-man Corolla at first glance.
The Media/ Entertainment screen isn't the best but with Apple Car connectivity you can bypass that. It's spritely enough and has lots of motorway speed grunt - even feels torqey at those speeds.
Lots of room, very practical and pretty economical - it is more relaxing and comfortable to drive than my previous cars IMO. The high level of tech and driver assistance helps with this.
The big downside for me is the gearbox - I've never had CVT, always manual or normal auto and I just can't make peace with it. It revs harshly when you want to get a move on and it grates on me a bit. That said there's a lot of pleasure from driving around on battery in almost silence. Around town the gearbox is fine - it's just up gradients and heavy acceleration where it feels harsh.
Other than that I'm very pleased and it will do the job I need it to well and it's quite amusing to surprise the odd boy racer at the lights once they see the Hybrid badge and try to "embarrass" me.
