Ebay sale delivering to Japan

Hi, I have a relatively high value small item for sale on ebay. Someone has bid but are now asking for it to be sent to Japan. They are currently the only bidder and I really want the item to sell.

I'm thinking this could be some sort of scam but I'm not a regular user of ebay so it could be legit. How would I go about this transaction to protect myself? There is no way I'd sent an item to Japan without the money in my hand and there being no way he can claim it back.

Any ideas?

You would have to send it via a courier as I'm not sure any postal service offers tracked delivery to other countries?

Just a cost to factor in anyway.

If the buyer really wants the item they'll be prepared to pay the extra costs.

Is this the sort of collectible item that someone in Japan may go to the trouble of buying from someone in the UK?

Not sure ebay lets you demand bank transfer instead of PP.

It doesn't but you can insist on payment by bank transfer via communication with your buyer.

Bank transfer is fine, I have used it often to buy and sell, and it avoids PayPal fees.

You just need to give your account and sort code (neither of which anyone can do anything with).

I note that these days in our bank (Halifax) the recipient's name is provided so you can actually be sure you are sending money to the right person.

One word of advice though - if it's a large amount of money, I would get the buyer to transfer a token amount first, ensure it's in your account and then get them to transfer the rest.

Also - bank transfers cannot be reversed - Paypal can...

Paypal is a bad idea, because unless you can prove that the buyer has received the item, the payment can be reversed.

I take it as the Petit Prince - they are a user with only 1 feedback comments too - to be honest I’ll be shocked if there aren’t more bids as the current price is quite cheap for it to sell for.

Paypal is a bad idea, because unless you can prove that the buyer has received the item, the payment can be reversed.

Or claim it was not as described, or arrived faulty, or was a copy or............
Why would you worry about giving your bank details?
If you give your bank account details out, even to a scammer, they can't magically withdraw money from your account.

Did you list it with the global shipping program option ticked?

If you send it through the GSP you are only responsible for getting it to the GSP departure location and then it is eBays problem.

I used to have a business selling on eBay, sent stuff all over the world with the GSP no problem. Sending internationally without it wasn’t worth the hassle in my opinion.

you have put uk only postage, you can use global scheme but there are issues. If it was me i would so a best offer auction and leave it a bit longer.

I sell all around the world and I’ve never been rooked by a Japanese person.

That’s no guarantee of course, but I take ‘risks‘ with sales to Japan that I wouldn’t take with sales to just about any other country.

Change the listing (or relist) with the option checked and use the GSP.

I just sent a large item to Australia for the grand total of £4.99

Same here, sold on EBay for years and never had a problem with Japan. I used to send a lot of Whiskey tumblers always got there and always good feedback.

Odd isn’t it that some countries have a good reputation and others awful ones , i used to buy certain items from germany and at the time they couldn’t use paypal for some reason, i used to send cash and never had an issue , italy has a bad rep for items “not received”.
