I was talking with a friend of mine recently about the number of bikes we’ve owned, he’s been riding 12 years and has had 3 bikes, I’ve been riding 6 years and have had 10 bikes.

I reckoned more bikers have been through a higher number of bikes than haven’t.

How many bikes have you had over how many years?

I've had 46 bikes in 30 years...ish, I think, I stopped counting at 40, I had 5 in one year never owning more than one at a time, I've had my current Z1000SX for almost 2 years now, its the longest I've had a single bike in many years (I did keep my FZR1000 Exup for 6 years) , my buying habits have changed, whereas before I paid cash and owned the bike outright for the last few years I've done the PCP thing, which is great but changing bikes gets expensive, my MT09SP cost me £1/mile but I was glad to take the hit, it makes no sense to chop and change every 5 minutes now and I can't be arsed anyway, new bikes with a warranty are much more appealing, just put tyres on it and pay for a yearly service.

Riding 7 years (17-24)...

I've used on the road:

XR125 (at 17 on CBT) > DRZ400 (at 19 on A2) > FZS600 (crashed) > FZS600

never seen the road and sat in the garage collecting dust ever since:

1962 Greeves Scottish > DT125LC > Aprilia Pegaso 125 > NSR125 > Yamaha RS200 > XR125 field bike

So ten in total... As you can tell, I can buy easily but struggle to sell...

Why do we seem to change bikes so much? When I was more into cars I didn’t change half as often.

I’m surprised there isn’t a successful bike swap website, it’d make it a lot cheaper to experience different bikes for all of us.

I think 13 maybe? Over 18 years, though probably 9 have been in the last 10 years. I thought it was more than that to be honest. Oh, 14, just remembered my current one. Just have 3 at the mo. BSA A65 and a Starfire, plus a Kawasaki EN400

I think people change a lot looking for the perfect bike. It doesn't exist, the answer is to have many bikes at the same time!

Had a road licence for 34 years, without 41 years.

Including field bikes and bike everything 25-30 bikes. Currently bike-less but always on the look out.

Only passed my test in Feb this year and I have three bikes already, plan on keeping them a while though so no plans to sell, three completely different bikes though.

Been riding on the road since 87. Had 10 years off without owning a bike. Owned about 15, usually 2 or 3 at a time and keep them a while. Rode another 6-8 bikes every year when I was in Spyderclub, its great to have them for long weekends if not in a position to own/store/use regular enough.

DT50
FS1E
GS125

and never passed my part 2 - got fed up, got a car. The usual.

Then, from 6 years ago:

VFR750
CB1000R
RD350F1 (project not built yet!)
YZF600R
XSR900
CBR900RR just bought and love it.

18 year gap between the first group and the second lot. Mostly, I've had one bike at a time, although the Blade, XSR and RD350 are now all in the stable at once.

3 bikes over 4 years, but two were the same model of bike! <---- 12yr gap ----> On my 4th bike in 3 years. I've got a bit pickier as I've got older. Also maybe a bit more flexible as I'm not reliant on them as my only transport nowadays.
