Just had the windscreen replaced after picking up a star crack. I had to pay the £115 excess. The clowns who fitted it have left it with two gaping holes at each bottom corner of the windscreen. I complained and the company sent another clown to look at it. Well the second clown said it was OK. I said I wanted the car to be as it was before they replacement where the seals were on top of the edge of the windscreen and there were no gaps. I do not think that is too much to ask is it? I am having chew with this national company which Admiral pointed us to as. They do not want to rectify the problem. Just wanted to warn others who have VW passats - watch out for the Cowboys!!!

I’ve had many issues before with insurance approved windscreen fitters. This time for my GTD estate i paid a local independent with good reviews and an active Facebook page showing all weird and wonderful jobs (classics, rectifying bad figments etc). Was £225 instead of 100 odd quid on the insurance but the guy did a great job and i don’t have to declare it each year!

contact your insurer to say that you're unhappy with the repair. Did you pay the excess by credit card? If so, your card provider might be able to help too.

Unfortunately I paid with a debit card since I do not have a credit card. The insurance do not want to know and just say to take it up with the Cowboys who installed it. As per classic Cowboys they say it is OK but the fact is it is not as per the car was before they put in the cheap glass windscreen. They should have replaced like for like.

Unfortunately it does state they may fit pattern glass when you go through the booking system.

Whilst that would be ideal that would also be extremely expensive, so unless you had an agreement in place to fit like for like, I don't think anyone would expect they would.

SteBrown By your smart ass reply I bet you work for the set of Cowboys I am on about. When you make a claim on your insurance you expect the car to be repaired as close as to what it was before you made the claim. I think that is reasonable. You would not expect a Ford Focus wing as a replacement on a VW would you. Well this glass they put in is absolute ste!! There are holes at the bottom edge of the windscreen at each corner which are three millimetres wide.

Bit unnecessary. I was just pointing out the terms and conditions it states on the website. You are correct that you wouldn’t fit a focus wing to a golf. But your insurance may fit a pattern golf wing to your golf. It’s the same thing. Unfortunately OEM glass is often double or more the price of the pattern ones (even the OE quality pattern parts).

SteBrown Appologies for the harsh reply but I am getting a little pissed off with the glass installers now. What I would expect is that the car looked the same as it did before the replacement even if cheaper glass was used. There should not be gaps between the glass and the frame of the windscreen. All I want is that the car looks the same as it did before the replacement. I had issues with this set of Cowboys several years ago when they replaced an Audi windscreen and buckled the seal bar above the windscreen. I had hassle getting that replaced then. Be careful of the cowboy firm which rhymes with auto arse!!

Is the cowl seated in across the bottom, or is there a gap?

That's a photo of the bottom corner and the other side is the same. There is a slight gap across the bottom and you can see the edges of the glass up both sides.

What is the fitting company saying?

When I pulled the original numptie that fitted it he said it was right. Then I complained to the head office and they sent an "assessor" ( basically another numptie) who said it was right. He would not agree that it was not like it was before the replacement because he had not seen it before the replacement. Right little smart arse he was.

If you can capture and upload a few more images showing the whole cowl/scuttle/trim we'll see what the issue is. You could also drive to a dealership and compare two cars side-by-side. If the difference is that obvious I'd take the issue up with the insurer who told you to use them.

Where are you based? If you're anywhere near me, or on my travels I'll happily have a look at it for you.
