My mate in France lives way out in the country and has a terrible mobile phone signal. I tried Whatsapp and normal mobile to talk with him tonight but without much success.
A stick-on antenna is not going to achieve anything but what are his likely effective options and how much would it cost? It is something that you buy and fit yourself or is it necessary to have it installed by a dealer and pay for a regular maintenance contract?

SFR and Orange look like they offer femtocells - effectivelly a mini 3G base station that he plugs into his ADSL/fibre router.

Only one fly in the ointment. He's so far in the sticks there is no landline and they quoted him an absolute fortune to provide one.

Might be worth him having a chat with these guys: https://www.mobilesignalboosters.co.uk/

Or if he wants to DIY something like this: https://www.ciena.com/insights/articles/How-I-buil...

I doubt those boosters are even legal and possibly more trouble than they are worth. I would be verbally 'beating up' the operator on this. Assuming he can make a call in the first place...

There is an option for a better aerial feeding something like router with an external aerial input that he will re transmit on the legit as wifi locally. But the aerial needs a signal to work with, the aerial will be better than the on in the phone.

Edit. A high gain omni 4g on a pole, maybe a higher gain directional again roof mounted feeding something like a draytek. Aerials around 120 quid and whatever appropriate router IF the aerial has enough to work with.
