I think that sums it up reasonably well.
Basically, something fun to tide me over whilst i wait for something else to be delivered!
Doesn't need to be cheap to run or even that practical, but nothing boring.
It'll be filling a gap, so ideally i don't want to lose much when it comes to selling it in January/February time.

Any suggestions please?

I think i'd rather have a tin-top, especially as i'd want to be selling it in the depths of winter.
I'll have a look at the options suggested - Thanks!

986 Boxster is surely the answer to this?

Just keep it a few months extra until Spring.

6 months use sounds more like shed duty to me. If you buy at 5k you'll be hard pushed to get near 4k for it in 6 months, whatever you buy. Even more so if you buy from a dealer/garage.

Of course you could go for an older, high performance car like a boxer but the risk is that it could throw up issues which will cost another 5k on top.

Maximum 2k on a MK1 swift sport would be my choice. Buy privately, then sell privately next year. Or a convertible like an mx5 or MR2 could work as you'd be buying after the summer and selling in spring.

In my experience an mx5 can go from full MOT to catastrophic rust write off in 6 months smile
For once mx5 definitely isn't the answer

Loads of good suggestions really

EP3 Civic Type R
8500 rpm screamer, brilliant gearbox, relatively light for the size.

Clio 172/182, maybe even a 197/200
Very light weight little cars, strong engine, the earlier ones (172/182) by all accounts feel quicker than the 197/200 but aren't.

R53 Mini Cooper S / JCW
On rails handling, character by the bucket load, punchy supercharged engine

Mk1/2 MX5
Classic RWD roadster, enough said

Any MR2
Mk1/2/3 all so different, and all equally enjoyable. Ultimately, mid-engined sports cars are not to be dismissed lightly, lovely cars to drive.

Nissan 350Z
A beefy GT car, with bucketloads of naturally aspirated torque, and a lovely noise. A special car for 5K

There are a few outliers too for a bit more money, example, Z4 Coupe 3.0Si, Integra, Mk3 MX5 with some BBR tuning, S2000, Boxster S etc

RX8 with a rebuilt engine, decat and a remap. They are hilarious fun and will spit flames.
