Estate-Diesel sort of shed price.

Hello.
I will need a diesel estate in the upcoming months. It will he used for long journeys only as I will still keep the Saab for running around. The Saab has got its problems but somehow it made me addicted to it so it will be a keeper for joe but I will need a utilitarian if you like. At the moment I live on a farm but it’s easy access, but my colleague said that it gets rough in the winters ( he has a fully modded Defender for those but it’s parked most of the times when it’s not winter) so maybe it has to be all wheel drive although it’s not 100% a necessity. Next problem is that I want an automatic because I never had one so why not? Economy is fairly important so as close as we can get to 50mpg but still need the power somewhat . Oh and I don’t want to pay 500+£
road Tax. Budget 3k tops what are my options?

If the track gets rough in winter I expect ground clearance is as important as 4wd, but also as you said estate not pickup, as long as it's not lowered most would be similar.

However maybe something like an Octavia 4x4 or Scout? Subaru Forrester?

It’s only a straight track for like a mile tops, but I don’t think there is a diesel forester or is it ?

I've had a 2007 280 E for the last two years and 42,000 miles. Now standing at 136,000 and its brilliant. Just came back from a 3600 miles trip in over weeks and it averaged just over 38 mpg and it didn't use a drop of oil, as usual.

They are solidly built heavy beasts so suspension can take a hammering, the bits are not that expensive however, and the smaller engines could imho be a bit overstressed so longevity may not be up to the standards of old.

Volvo V70?, I got one that came up as a cheap commuter and it’s faultless, drives perfect, no rust and over 200k on the clock, really comfy seats, auto and does late 40s MPG.

I've need some seriously abused mercs on farms that still drive and presumably pass the MOT each year.

Peugeot 406 wasn't uncommon for taxis and farm cars but later models appear to have lost the edge?
