A colleagues child is off to college for a three day a week course next month. I understand that said child must do work placement or some other further education for the other two days.

The college appears unwilling to confirm whether or not the work placement has to be specifically related to the course or can be any form of work, which is causing the student some stress. The eventually qualification would result in office/counselling based work and the work placement would be office based, so sort of relevant and I would argue definitely useful to the student.

Does anyone know please?

I already have, and it's first hand as it's from the student. The college refuse to confirm whether or not the work placement has to be course related.

Is this by word of mouth from the college or by letter?

If its word of mouth then surely theres a process to follow in raising a grievance?

But i must ask, why wouldnt the student want to work the other 2 days in a sector they are studying?

Sounds abit like a studying nursing and wanting to work in a garage on the other 2 days.

The college aren't replying to emails and there is never anyone available to talk to and they aren't returning calls. A pretty crap show when all said and done.

Prospective employers are apparently not offering work placement because of covid!
