Been talking to a national training company about doing a welding course, in an effort to retrain myself a but and allow opportunities in other areas.

Course is about 2 grand but you can pay monthly, and is well set up to fit around work etc. Cover all areas, seems very comprehensive. Workshop is luckily quite close to making it more viable.

My query is about perhaps getting assistance with the fees? I am late 40's, are there ANY avenues where someone like myself could apply for any assistance with this financially, as obviously trying to commit to something like this while out of work or furloughed is a fairly big commitment with no income coming in.

Dole will only put you on stuff like FTA etc to get a result, the guy mentioned Princes Trust perhaps? Does anyone have any ideas about places one might go and at least ask the question?

As a 54 year old child, I too need retraining as an adult.

You used to be able to get a Career Development Loan, but these closed in 2019.

I think the only option now you have is savings, a loan from friends/family, or a standard personal loan, but you'd have to secure that and pay it back from the off.

Doesn't the training provider have links to friendly financing bodies?

Good luck, let us know how you get on. FYI a pal of mine has just retrained as a tiler at 50 and is doing well with work (West Midlands) so it can be done.

Work after qualification?
Shocked by the low rates welding jobs are being offered for.
How long does course last for?what's the qualification nvq?takes serious amount of time and experience to become competant for coding, weld tests prior to getting decent jobs, rather than production welding doing tacks/jigs

OK thanks for the serious replies guys.

Course covers everything from basic right through to Arc, with MIG, TIG etc, City and Guilds and obviously signed off for each stage as you go, plus lots of
other stuff related like setting up business, safety etc.

I have looked into a C&G Bursary as it is a C&G course, they are not accepting applicants currently and I fear having some savings might mean i dont stand much chance, but if I can get working maybe I can cover it easier, you can pay monthly or lump sum.

I am aware the rates are not great, but compared to the minimum wage stuff I am getting on job sites for my current skills set it is an improvement. And also it enables me to potentially move away to a cheaper location and not be on the bottom rung financially as I would be now most jobs in the place I want to move to are minimum wage due to the mass immigration situation in the East and pretty much everywhere related to manufacturing, the wage bottom has fallen out of the market with the massive influx of cheap labour and blokes sleeping 10 to a flat for 300 quid a month rent.

If you go onto jobseeker benefits, do you then qualify for free courses?

I've been struggling to find anywhere near me that does ear wax removal - a 30 min procedure. Shouldn't be too hard to retrain to perform that task.

I recently looked at returning to college, funded by an Advanced Learner Loan. (https://www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan)

Some courses probably aren't eligible, but a lot are. In the end, I managed to get into university instead (at 31, no less.)

I think that used to be the case.

I am not claiming JSA and according to the guy who runs the course loads of people have tried to get JSA type funding but all they seem to want to do is train people for jobs NOW, like FLT drivers security guards etc and he told me nobody who has applied for help has even got close to it.

I can afford the fees but would obviously like to be working to make that difference in not cutting into savings, so might have to wait until i can achieve that.
