Can someone explain an easy method of pimping gin up. . . I was at a party sometime ago and there was a great selection of home-brews which tasted good and evidently made with adding frozen fruit to gin, leaving it for a few months and obviously there was other parts to the conversation but I can't seem to remember for some reason. Thanks in advance lads

Fill a jar with fruit. Add as much gin as possible.
If you want a sweet liqueur type then add suger.

If citrus, leave for a day or too (longer and it goes bitter)
Soft fruit, a few weeks.
Stuff like sloes, longer.

Then drink....

According to my wife anyway who normally has a bottle or 3 on the go wink

You can also use it to further infuse in sherry.

Rhubarb works well you just need 1:1 ratio of rhubarb and sugar and then enough gin to cover the fruit. Leave for 3- 6 months somewhere dark and cool with a lid on it. Its ready when is a nice pink colour.
A good crumble or two can be made after with the fruit.

My other half makes this...though it only needs to be left for 2-3wks I think.

It's a little dangerous - I have some plastic pint glasses from the cricket and rugby that get half filled with ice, half fill with rhubarb gin, then top up with Crabbies and keep topping it up until done. Rinse and repeat smile

Gin is just flavoured vodka, why not just put your fruit in vodka instead?

My wife did Rhubarb gin as we had a load of rhubarb in the garden.... Looks like we will have 3 lots this year! It was rather nice, IMO.

If you believe that then you’re a sad man, with severely compromised taste buds, but all is not lost, I have a bascule/suspension bridge for sale, which links the Aldgate area of London with Bermondsey, £7,000, what do you say?

Not only do I believe it, it is also a fact Frank. I don't get the reference to the bridge I'm afraid its probably some insane globe trotting taxi driving reference I'm not in on.

Delving further into this, I discovered two sites which agreed with you about vodka and gin, so I offer you a sincere apology, when I’m wrong I’ll admit that I was wrong.
What I couldn’t get past was the fact that gin is made with juniper, which gives it its distinctive taste, whereas vodka was originally distilled from grain, then eventually potatoes, and although having a recognisable taste, it’s far less distinctive than gin.
The reference to Tower Bridge, came from the hoary old gag about selling London Bridge to a gullible American tourist, it ended, “if you believe that, I’ve got a bridge that you may be interested in.”
Apologies again

Or when you drain the gin off add some flat cider and leave for 24 hours and drain again, this flushes out the remaining spirit and you now have fruit gin cider!

You, sir, are a gent!

I can confirm through much experimentation that you need a neutral base spirit to make gin (some commercial gin is made with a whey-based spirit) and cheap vodka is about as neutral as you can get at home.

500ml in the bottom of one of these, juniper, coriander seeds, cinnamon, angelica (required as a fixative) and whatever else you want in the top. After 40 mins or so you can get some world class gin if you do it right.

I've tried adding fruit in as well but the fruit flavours are normally pretty subtle. The best one was adding a frozen fruits of the forest to a standard gin recipe. yum

I am confused though. Surely no-one is saying that vodka plus fruit is the same as gin plus fruit? Regardless of the source of the alcohol in the gin (and not all gin is made from raw ethanol) it is not going to taste the same as it is missing all those ingredients that make gin taste like it does wink
Oh, and if anyone says that you cannot taste the botanicals once you have added fruit then I refer them to the previous comment about compromised taste buds! tongue out

Several of the well known gin and vodka brands sold in the UK (Gordons and Smirnoff, for example) are produced in exactly the same distillery - Cameron Bridge in Fife.

Vodka + fruit = flavoured / infused vodka

Vodka + botanicals (must include juniper) = gin

Gin + fruit = flavoured / infused gin

I’ve been on a couple of gin making courses, brilliant one in Manchester if you fancy a good day out. They show around their distillery, then you make a bottle to your own recipe to take home.

They also make sure you go away well oiled aswell!!

I'd be interested to know what other method there is of making gin?
