What could be the cause of this type of crack in fairly fresh paint? The car had some rust sorted in that area and a full respray about 2 months ago so its a bit frustrating theres already a problem with it.
I will be contacting the place that did the work on Monday to see if they can sort it.
Car is a Mazda MX5

Large amount of filler, which has now cracked? I'm no expert. Does a magnet stick... Was it a cheap repair, or intended to be a good repair?

I haven't tried a magnet yet but will when I get in from work.
It was a 9 month long job and the price bordered on extortion so it better be a good one.

Is that rust on whatever that bit in the bottom right of the pic is?

Could be a multitude of things, hard to be sure from 1 photo.
Where on the car is it ? Has it had a repair panel welded in in that area ? If yes it could be because the panel wasn't seam welded or because the filler is too thick.
Alternatively it could be soft/not fully cured paint underneath.

Are you sure it's not been scratched ?

Can you maybe take a large 'overall' photo showing where on the car it is. And then a few close ups from other angles?

I had something that looked very similar happen on one of my (admitedly very elderly) cars.
The first repairer informed me it was just a bit of 'settlement' and 'bring it back in a couple of months guv', I suggested that as it wasn't a house he might care to sort it out sooner rather than later. After three attempts over a six month period I gave up and took it to a restoration specialist who informed me that it was due to an older repair in the area having been completed in materials that were not compatible with modern ones. The entire panel was stripped back to bare steel and re-done. It's been perfect ever since and when the time and budget allow he'll be doing the same to the rest of the car.
Wasn't cheap by any manner or means but as far as I'm concerned it was worth every penny.

9 months?! That seems like a long time, is that how long a respray normally takes? I'm asking because I'll be booking my project in for one soon and had hoped it would be weeks rather than months.

If not a few days.

Obviously depends on the garage, the work they are doing, and if its a 'full respray' , glass in blow over, repair, etc.

But, yes something not right here sadly I feel.
