Cheap tow car ideas

We are looking for a cheap 4x4 tow car for a project we have in the mix, probably for the next 12 months or so. I was looking at old 4.0 range rovers but sense has now prevailed, the £2k\3k market is ropey at best! Now I know expectations will be low, reliability very questionable....so are there any recommendations for this kind of budget?

Kia Sorento is often seen towing horseboxes / twin axle caravans - have had a few later Kia’s and they have been well screwed together.

The other “cheap but strong” options are Ssangyong or old MB ML.

Curved ball - do you need an “suv” - Skoda Superb 4x4 (estate or hatch) is a lovely mile muncher and towcar.

Just a thought, how about an Audi Allroad? I picked up a 2006 3.0 TDI for under £3000.

Not sure what you need to tow but the capacity is 2100kg. It's good on fuel and really nice to drive, plenty of torque. The Allroad has air suspension which is handy, lots have the factory option tow bar, it's hidden away and you pull a lever to release it.

Needs a fairly decent road clearance as will have to head over fields with a trailer

Not considered a Kia...are they generally reliable?

The first gen Touaregs fall into that price bracket.

Probably looking at the 2.5TDI for that budget or a ropey 5.0 V10 if you're a masochist.

I have an ML270 CDI for just this and like it a lot. Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD (WJ) would be another good bet, I think.

A Frontera 2.2DTI would do a decent job too, I think

The 2.5tdi is a good engine it's just the auto box is the weakness.
