Diesel without DPF sub £1K
Discussion
Hello all
What options do I have for a diesel without a DPF (minimising trouble) and below £1K?
Needed for 500miles per week motorway commuting. The current £600 307HDi has done me 18 months but is now showing "diesel additive min level" and has no boost. Everything is difficult to access and I do not have the time/enthusiasm.
306 D turbo is an option...had one before but they're going up in price now.
Any other ideas?
Cheers

I saw the thread title and came to suggest exactly that. I've had a few over the years and used to swear by them. I was doing 500 miles a week in my last one when it was over twenty years old and it was faultlessly reliable. Ran them on veg oil too without any modifications required and they were ridiculously cheap to run.As you say though, they're getting rarer and more sought after. You can't pick a nice one up for a couple of hundred quid any more!
How about a later 306 with the 2.0HDI. There must be a few of those knocking about still.
Pfft, I'll match the 306 and throw a Volvo S60 2004 ish Euro 3 into the mix.
Lovely commuting car, bombproof mechanicals (less bomb proof electrics), wonderful torquey engine, fantastic build quality.
A customer had 71mpg out of ours the other day. Dear God, that's hard to believe, but even I Mr leadboot, get 60 odd.
I don't even know how this is possible for such a big car / engine, but hey, I'm not moaning.
I paid £750 for a well maintained one with 157k miles on it, and it comes with some wonderful brilliant leather electric heated / adjustable seats. Volvo seats v Pug seats......?
really no contest.
Nice respectable image too.
But I'd take a Pug on the back road.

what kind of mot pass guarantee do you have on any sub £1k car?
that depends on if this current car whether the fap/eolys system is the only problem on an otherwise good car or if there are other issues.
Any sub £1K car these days is only a couple of MOT line items away from being crusher fodder, especially with the cheap car price increases after covid.
You would be surprised how good a £30 remap is if you could be bother to learn how to do something simple, the difference between a £30 remap and a £300 remap is the person doing it.

Reliability needed get a T22 avensis diesel. The earlier ones were td which were great, then the 16 valve d4d came out in 01. The d4d in that shape used the 1cd-ftv engine that is bullet proof and had no issues as testified by the 500k taxis still running about in some areas. They do require a timing belt unlike later models, but have plenty of space and are punchier than you'd imagine they would be.
I never had much luck with vag stuff except the sdi which doesn't have a turbo, a dpf, or a duel mass flywheel. It's slower but not to the extent some would have you believe, it would out-drag most work vans I drive daily. You'll get a clean mk5 golf or octavia for that. I'd still take an avensis first.

I'm sorry, I was being flippant. I understand this end of the market is never far away from destruction. I operate in it most of the time, so I understand it pretty well.that depends on if this current car whether the fap/eolys system is the only problem on an otherwise good car or if there are other issues.

But I also know that a £30 is well under the going rate for a good quality remap. There are maps available on Ebay for very low costs, but I've seen what they can do to the car as well - I've managed to learn this through 10 years or so in the trade as an auto electrician - not always a simple task.
Third vote for a 75/ZT - until last year I owned one of the larger parts specialists for them so have a good idea of what they’re like to live with.
Grab a diesel, give it a good service and it should see you well; the only issue is the clutch hydraulics are naff on the manuals.
The autobox is an ultra reliable Jatco JF506E - lovely and smooth with 4th and 5th gear lockup for good economy on long runs.

tter (and a new bag of unforeseen problems), why not just top up the exhaust fluid on your current car? What does it take, AdBlue?
