Best daily driver for £70000 or less

Hi guys
I just joined the forum to ask for some advice. I have 70 grand to spend on a car and would like to know what everyone thinks is a good car to buy.
I would like something that is practical (family of five), fun to drive (something quick) and for that price a little luxury would be nice but I'm not as fussed. The car has to be a 4 door and I'm not bothered if you suggest new or used cars. If used I don't want to be worried about it breaking down every month. I am looking to keep the car for atleast 5 years.

Be prepared for anecdata about people who knew a bloke who once said he’d heard someone in a pub say they break down every five miles. Then look at you local roadsides for the absence of massed ranks of rotting FFRR husks.

With £70k you can buy a very wide range of tin.

How big/old are the kids/family and how often do you do 5 up?

How many miles a year and what sort of running costs can you live with... both mpg and servicing?

Any notable luggage requirements.... 5 people, 5 pushbikes and holiday kit for a week is a different proposition to 5 being carried one a blue moon.

The answer is probably a Cayenne/RR/M5 regardless

Also I know cars aren't good investments but are there any cars that will hold their value better if I decide to sell after 4 years. I am not fussed about mpg I just want something that will make me smile whenever I get in it.

In my experience most four door cars will take a fair depreciation hit.

I noticed someone mentioned a Panamera V8. I have an ST Turbo that I like very much but in truth it is too tight for five people. Just a four seater.

I would look at an AMG estate car. Huge performance and plenty of room.

The Stelvio is a great car try & get as late a car as possible as the build quality on the early cars wasn't great if you like the Stelvio take a look at the Jeep Trackhawk:

Stelvio sounds a great idea to me if you want an SUV, the closest thing to a Ferrari off-roader until they finally release their own, at no doubt four times the price. I'd check closely to see how spacious it actually is, and also the ride, as performance SUVs tend to end up rather bumpy as they try to keep the high-up mass in check, without active anti-roll.

I struggle to think of any new cars of this type that are likely to hold their value at all well tbh. Recently the new cars that have avoided depreciation are those that have subsequently been either taken off sale or had their price jacked up to manage fleet emissions targets, so perhaps something whose manufacturer will struggle to keep selling it in 3-4 years time? Otherwise Porsche probably. The other thing is to try and seek out a deal, every grand you get off a new car now is a grand less depreciation, maybe Alfa dealers are hard-pushed to move Stelvios? I've not seen any on the road tbh.

The most plausible way to avoid depreciation is to buy an older car, although even then larger cars tend to shed value for decade after decade, you'd have to go a long way back to find something that's a genuine appreciating classic. And of course older cars of this nature have a way of throwing large bills, and if you're unlucky may fail to proceed at an inconvenient time.
