With both kids off to uni in a few weeks I wasn’t going to have a nice new MINI sat around idle for weeks on end - a cheap, park and forget alternative was needed. A Polo fitted the bill and despite being 12 years older than the MINI still (in their eyes) has some cred.

There are some really rough examples out there but this 1.4 Match has only done 72k miles with a full history and new cambelt and water pump fitted before sale.

It’s in tidy but not immaculate condition but the inside is lovely. Build quality is good and it feels a bigger car than it is.

I drove it 80 miles home and despite needing a 6th gear sits at 80 happily. A pleasantly soft ride compared to the MINI’s.

I’ve briefed the kids on lack of remote locking, hill hold, LED’s, Bluetooth etc etc! And the missing 60hp!

These little cars hold their value so I hope with only a few thousand a year going on it that it will not lose too much more.

I know this doesn’t get much less PistonHeads but thought I’d share anyway!

At least you have the 4 cylinder 1.4. My mother had a 1.2 3 cylinder 9N3 which was serviced on the dot for 10 years and 80k miles. Then the engine went on fire in the middle of a busy junction luckily thanks to a quick thinking stranger with a fire extinguisher the only real damage was the plastic grills which melted. Oil had leaked all over the manifold which had caught fire.

Turns out these 3 cylinder engines can let go in spectacular fashion at any age. An engine builder I spoke to at the the time said he'd seen at least a hundred with damaged heads. Said VW knew there was a problem but continued to sell that engine until 2010.

Yours is 1.4 so won't have this problem.

It had to be the 1.4. Friends kids have 1.2’s and they are sooooo slow. Not to mention the fire thing you mentioned!

Only marginally more to insure as well.
