My brother had a new driveshaft fitted to his qashqai by a local garage. A week or so later it went in for its mot at Halfords and the tester pointed out an issue with the shaft. When N/S wheel is rotated when jacked up its almost like the CV joint is tight, so much so that it pushes the Gearbox over to the o/s at it’s 3 tight points in rotation.
On the road the car drives perfectly and can be driven on full lock in both directions with no noise. It’s as if tye inner CV joint is tight at the extreme edge of its rotation for want of a better phrase. Does anyone know if this is normal with a new shaft and likely to get better with use or is it a faulty item?

I wouldnt pay much attention to anything you were told by Halfords, most of them shouldnt be allowed near anything more technical than a pedal car.

Take it to the garage that fitted it and ask them.

To be a fair I wouldn’t generally but I’ve had a look and it is pushing the box over when spun and tight in three spots when rotated. It doesn’t seem quite right to me but It’s not something I’ve took much notice of before. I’m half minded in the absence of other symptoms to let him run it for a month or so and recheck it to see if it’s loosened up.

Moving the gearbox without any noticeable feel on the road ?

Yes. Only when Jacked up with suspension unloaded. Pushes the engine & box over to the o/s maybe half an inch (to be fair it doesn’t take a massive effort to move the box on its mounts).

No issues or feel at all on the road. I suspect when the suspension is loaded up and the joint is better aligned it rotates freely.

I cant believe if spinning the wheel over by hand is enough to move the gearbox that there is no feel on the road. There is quite a bit of force needed to move the lumps, especially when you want to create a gap temporarily. Half an inch is serious deflection.

Maybe something more than a cv joint issue? Engine or gearbox mounts maybe?

It’s definitely the shaft that’s causing the issue and you can feel the joint go tight as it starts to push the engine over and it’s tight on the same three spots on each rotation. No sign of noise or vibration at all when drinking at speed or in large circles on full lock(I have driven it myself to confirm).

Get the shaft replaced then would be my answer.

But I still don't understand why that can't be felt on the road.

the inner cv joint isn’t at such an acute angle when the suspension is loaded.

It almost sounds like the drive shaft is actually just too short in that it isn't still in its "slack area" of travel when on full droop.

Ordinarily I would ignore Halfrauds untrained chimps but it sounds like you need to take it back & raise your concerns.
