can anyone help me understand how the bike test works

basically im not sure wether to do the a2 test which will allow me to ride bikes like honda adv or the "proper" test which will allow me to ride an r1

my assumption was that if i did an a2 test it would be easier and quicker becuase its a less powered bike. however i was told that they are essentially the same test ,

they take the same time to complete and is not harder

so im better of just doing the big test that way it covers all lower powered bikes aswell

is this true

It's all the same test, it is done on age.
If you're under 24 you'll be on a restricted licence, if you're over 24 it will be unrestricted.
Go on the .Gov website for the full info.

Tests are composed of 4 Parts;

CBT
Theory Test
MOD1
MOD2

If you're 24 or older, you'll take MOD1 and MOD2 on a 600cc+ powered bike, which upon completion will give you a Full Unrestricted (A) License

If you're younger than 24, you'll take MOD1 and MOD2 on a smaller bike, which upon completion will give you an A2 (restricted) licence.

As has been said, as long as you're over 24, it makes sense to go the Full License/Unrestricted route, as the practical tests (MOD1 and MOD2) will be identical, it's only the bike you take the test on that varies.
