mordern 4cyl air cooled
Discussion
Emissions testing makes them very uncompetitive compared to water-cooled 4-cylinders though.
Take the current Monster 797 vs the 796 - both air-cooled. The old bike has nearly 20% more power and torque from the same displacement.
And the Honda RS above - 87hp and 91Nm of torque from 1140cc air-cooled. The Z900RS (in the same category of classic-looking modern) is a 948cc water-cooled motor with 111hp and 98Nm of torque.

Would i notice any difference riding a water cooled compared to an air cooled?
Water cooled is quieter, and the engines are less strangled by emissions, fundamentally because water cooled engines can run much tighter tolerances, due to the reduced operating temperature rangeYamaha XJR1300. I had the last of the carbbed versions. 54 Reg i think? Lovely smooth torquey engine, i regret selling it but I did keep it for 8 years which is possibly the longest I ever kept a bike.
The XJR continued on for a few more years until fairly recently with Fuel Injection replacing the carbs. I'm not sure if they are still available new or not? I think Euro 4 emissions finally killed them off.

You could buy a new one up until very recently. Looks like Yamaha have dropped it very quietly from their lineup as I thought it was sill on sale but its not on their website any more. The XJR continued on for a few more years until fairly recently with Fuel Injection replacing the carbs. I think they cafe'd the last one a bit too much but the small fuel tank and 240Kg weight is what put me off most.
Got back into biking this year after a few years break.
Bought a 2003 Yamaha xjr1300 in January and a 2005 z1000 in July. Man logic dictated that meant I could have one on the road to ride and one in pieces to mess with at any one time. So 2 four cylinder UJMs. Which couldn’t be more different!
Xjr - twin shock, conventional frame, and forks, carbs, air cooled, all about the torque!
Zed- monoshock, upside down forks, water cooled, fuel injection, all about the revs!
Both fantastic fun though.
One thing that is really noticeable though, is how much heat comes off the xjr onto your legs compared to the Zed.
Also although the Zed is faster 125 bhp and lighter, the XJR feels faster most of the time because of the low down torque.
