Oh my god!!

Just had a debate on the difference between football players salaries and realised they really do make very little in comparission to the MLB(Major League Baseball) and NBA(National Basketball Association) players.

Apart from putting ghastly wheels and interiors in cars, how on earth do they spend the insane amount of money they earn?

So, too late to learn this Yank version of good old rounders eh?;)

1. Rodriguez, Alex
$26,000,000
New York Yankees

2. Bonds, Barry
$22,000,000
San Francisco Giants

3. Ramirez, Manny
$22,000,000
Boston Red Sox

4. Jeter, Derek
$19,600,000
New York Yankees

5.Mussina, Mike
$19,000,000
New York Yankees

Good luck to them I say.....

If somebody is stupid enough to pay that kind of money to anyone for hitting a ball with a stick, it's certainly not the players fault....

Wonder what salary "Babe" Ruth would command if he was alive today.....

Not much probably - at 110 he'd barely be able to swing the bat.

One has to question if this is just their salary, or does it include all the endorsements they do, etc...

....and consider this. If we are talking about batters in baseball their average strike rate is poor. I saw a study a while back when a bunch of scientists decided that you had the same chance of hitting the ball well if you closed your eyes. Basically, there is so little time to decide where the ball is going that closing your eyes and swinging the bat resulted in just as many good strikes as keeping your eyes opening and trying to adjust to the balls flight.

Only a bit ;-) I have more first-ball ducks than anyone else did at my school ever - and I sure as hell kept my eyes closed!

But the salaries are a pittance in comparison.

Didn't Shaquille O'Neal sign a $130m contract for 7 years at the Lakers? This doesn't include endorsements, game fees (per game) and bonuses.

I'm sure LeBron James scored a $58m deal with Nike when he signed for the Cleveland Cavaliers at age 18.

Scary sums of money!

Having read Atherton's book it gives quite a good insight into how batsmen decide on the shots to play. It's all about reading the bowlers hand as he either runs in or bowls (one of the reasons why some bowlers hide their grip on the ball). Can't say it's a problem I have ever had, as most club bowlers aren't quick enough to require it. Still doesn't make me any good though...........

Shaq is only $27m for the 2005 season. Lebron James signed with Nike for a contract reportedly worth $90m at 18 before he had played his first NBA game.

All these salaries are paid by the team. Endorsements are extra pocket money.

Stupid numbers, agreed.

*But*

The General Manager of the Boston Red Sox is on $500,000 a year. Last season, having taken them to their first World Series win since 1918, he got a whole 10% bonus.

Each team plays 162 games in a season (of approximately 3-4 hrs duration each), which means they are working 5-6 days a week, even excluding travelling days (about 1/2 of this in practise due to the rotation of players) but it still kinda makes football players 90 minutes a week seem damn feeble! It's not like they are back home a couple of hours after the match either.

From the people I know that have been to Baseball stadia for visits, there are almost always big name players around from early in the morning, and they are more than happy to chat to fans, sign things etc. The players actually seem to like the game, unlike footballers who seem to want to get away from it as quickly as possible.

That is because another guy getting paid $20,000,000 can throw it at him at 92 MPH. Their hit average would go up if an average person were throwing the rock.
