hoping the wisdom of the Pistonheads collective can help me!

Budget 20k max, im creeping where I started to get to that.

So im looking ideally for a coupe but would a saloon would also be an option, not really a hatchback as I have one (R53 Mini Cooper S).

I dont need practicallity, dont really need more than 2 seats but dont mind if there are more.

I dont want anything as raw as a Caterham or Lotus.

I want some decent performance, 0-60 under 6 seconds and ideally circa 5 or less.

Cars in my head im considering:

987.2 Cayman S
BMW z4M Coupe
BMW 240i Msport
E92 Bmw M3
Merc C63 AMG
BMW Z4 35i - Not a massive convertible fan but it has a tin top.
Audi TT RS

Cars ive discounted

Golf R
Merc A45
Audi various hatchbacks
Porsche Boxster
Audi RS4/5

Honestly the thought process is doing my head in and I wasn't planning to buy until next March but my R53 Mini is now off road having failed me on a track day and honestly it was only meant to be a track car anyway I do need a second car.

My wife has the family car so practicallity isn't a big issue.

Look forward to the comments.

I'm bias but I really love mine & they're very rare with depreciation is near stagnant this is a great buy:

CLK63 AMG

Or there's the less powerful C63 125 Edition Coupe which is another great choice but I am bias.

Now for me the Nissan 370Z Nismo is a car that you should test drive they're a proper drivers car that would give a Z4M a run for it's money as well as having more sensible running costs:

Now when it comes to the E90/92 M3 & seeing how much my brother has spent on his to keep it tip top there could be many reasons not to recommend one but I do like them (his is a peach) I'd go for the E90 it's the better looking out of it & the coupe imo, they're nuch more rare & seem to be more solid depreciation wise:

SLK55 AMG cracking cars which just put a smile on your face:

Leftield Option:

C6 Corvette a nice drivers car & they're an easy car to maintain

If the LHD is of putting then take a look at the VXR8 your budget will land you a 6.2:

5.7/6.0 VXR Monaro

Or the Monaro

I'm totally biased as I bought a Z4M Coupe last December, and I love it!

I've never driven any Porsche, but everything I have read says they drive better.

But while I'm brave enough for a BMW, potential Porsche bills were just too scary for me!

The others on your list seem more like GTs than Sports cars, so maybe you need to work out exactly what would suit you best.

Thanks for all the replies guys,

I think im putting the M3 to one side now having done a lot of reading on BMW forums and specifically people who have gone from the Z4M to the E9x M3, the consensus seems to be unless you are really pushing on it feels like any other 3 series of the same vintage, nothing wrong with that but im after more excitement day to day.

Good points on the 370Z I've been looking at the Nismo edition and it looks a very tempting prospect at that spec.

The used car market seems to be lacking in stock generally at the moment compared to a few months ago, less of the type of car im looking for generally.

Thanks for the inputs so far.
