Golf rear brake wear
Discussion
My MK7.5 Golf GTi has just had it's first service at 22k miles. I bought the car second hand in January at 16k miles. The VW dealer told me that the rear brakes are 90% worn, with the discs being pitted. The fronts brakes are only 35% worn. Has anyone experienced this excessive rear brake wear before?
Hi
I bought my Golf at 3 years old and under 25K miles. The rear brakes failed the MOT. Discs and pads were replaced.
Previously I had a Leon, mechanically the same car. I had to replace the rear brakes at 35K miles on this. They were heavily pitted and corroded. Especially the inside face, the inside pad was almost seized in the caliper.
Certainly with the Leon and I suspect with the Golf the friction material wasn’t actually worn out it was corrosion that forced the replacement.

90% worn AND pitted doesn't make a lot of sense - you'd expect one or the other. If you can't look yourself, be worth getting someone to look, especially at the inner pads. Rear pads do tend to stick and wear out. Years ago brakes used to be stripped and cleaned at service but garages don't do that now.
Could be the dealer is exaggerating - wife's Tiguan got an amber warning at the dealer yesterday on a tyre worn to 5mm!
Avoid things like washing the car and then leaving the discs wet, and give the brakes a regular work out to clean the discs.
