GT12 vs Vanquish race
Discussion
A rather pointless comparison really - I doubt any owner of either a GT12 or Vanq Volante really cares about such things, other than these two chaps, but each to their own.
Both have the same spec engine, so it was always going to be very similar really. The reason is the GT12 weighs less, but it has a lot of aero - so in a straight line drag race that goes against it. Aero is good for cornering but terrible for top speed. The Vanq Vol however no doubt has less drag, albeit at the expense of weight, a more lossy auto gearbox, and overall rigidity (again largely irrelevant in a straight drag).
The owner of that GT12 is certainly pimping it out to anyone and everyone at the moment. Its been in about 4 vids in the last month...

ya agreed. a pointless comparison. Still expected gt12 to clean house.
I don't it was mentioned if that was a 6 speed Vanq. It's def not a Vanq S. So it likely has 30-35 hp less plus more weight
It is deffo a Vanq S... Look at the trim and the wheel design - definitely a Vanq S, not a Vanq. Also at 1:05 into the video they state it has 603 HP which is 595 BHP, and 630 NM of torque... That is GT12 engine spec, which is fitted to the Vanq S. I missed the reference to the 6 speed, but if they said that then its the usual journo mistakes as they don't know their subject matter.I don't it was mentioned if that was a 6 speed Vanq. Same engine, basically 85% the same car at the core - that's why it was close.

Tiff Needell should not be so sloppy.
Firstly being a regular Vanquish it hasn’t got 603HP. Nonetheless both presenters state it is a Vanquish S, Tiff adding: they’re both equipped with an automatic gearbox.
Well, I suspect Vanquish is the earlier 6 speed and the GT12 is definitely an automated manual not an auto.
Very poor journalism, good for the tabloid press but nothing else.
And as righty stated above what’s the point in doing a drag race where the GT12 will be penalised by aero that will only show its advantage in curves.
I loved Tiff Needell’s review of the original V12 Vantage at Millbrook but this latest video is poor journalism and ultimately pointless.

No I’m afraid you’re wrong Adam, look at the front spoiler, the model name at the back which states “Vanquish “, not “Vanquish S” but also the single tailpipes as opposed to the Vanquish S’s double tail pipes. oooh, ok - so this is a Vanquish with the powerkit upgrade? I thought those wheels were Vanq S wheels? The figures quoted are those for the 595bhp spec engine....
So what is this car - if its an upgraded spec car, then its bad reporting to either not mention it, or the figures are wrong as they should be 565BHP and 620NM.
I thought it was a standard Vanq, but not sure.
I would have bet a GT12 would be much quicker than a 6 speed "normal Vanq. volante. who knows, maybe poor driving etc is to blame.
Obviously a 8 speed Vanq s brings them much closer. Still hard to make up for the weight difference at likely a few hundred pounds.

Driven in auto mode, the GT12 might be slower than in manual sport mode using the gearbox’s hypershift.
The Vanquish’s conventional auto is much easier to use and doesn’t require any practice to master as opposed to the GT12’s SportshiftIII’s gearbox.
So probably very much driver related.

That Vanquish is an 8 speed (I know the owner) Not an S. I thought the figures that came up on the screen were somewhat optimistic for both cars.
Out of interest, I attempted to find which model has a 6 speed auto and which has the 8 speed auto.
First tried the 'Pre- owned' website. AML revised their website a while ago and I was not impressed. Well, my opinion was confirmed again, because all they appear to show is;
Vanquish ...= Automatic transmission.
Vanquish S = Automatic transmission.
If you want to know how much a month they cost, everything detail seems to be listed, but not much about the car specification. Their previous website did better than that.
I gave up and then turned to Wikipedia.
Vanquish ....2012 to 2014 = 6 speed; 565 hp.
Vanquish ....2014 to 2018 = 8 speed; 568 hp.
Vanquish S .2017 to 2018 = 8 speed; 595 hp.
I had thought the Vanquish S superseded the Vanquish, but the Wikipedia dates show both models continued until production ended.

To be fair, judging by the interior shots of both cars neither driver uses the paddles, so it looks like it's simply mash the throttle pedal to the carpet and let the gearboxes do their own thing. The Vanquish’s conventional auto is much easier to use and doesn’t require any practice to master as opposed to the GT12’s SportshiftIII’s gearbox.

Back when SSC planned the event, I was invited along with the Corvette. Of course it's not finished yet, and at the time I was between Vanquish and DB11 ownership. Maybe one day there'll be a re-run. A regular V12 DB11 on some PS4S could cover ground quite effectively. The Corvette wouldn't work - too much power, no traction, and probably too loud.
The GT12 owner's a pleasant chap with a few nice toys (GT12, just traded a GT8 for a 4.0 Vantage AMR, and has a 488 GTB). Automated manuals for drag racing aren't very effective. The ZF6 / ZF8 auto is far better suited so I'm not surprised the GT12 didn't scarper into the distance, even with the weight advantage. At those speeds (barely getting beyond 100mph), downforce doesn't play much of a part in things so the rear wing wouldn't have hampered it much.
A long, long time ago on old Top Gear (mid to late 90's I think), Tiff was given the opportunity to drive a Top Fuel car, back when they had about 5000bhp (they now produce around 11,000bhp). It was quite amusing to see him not get full throttle (I think he got to 90%, which isn't enough to hit the microswitch to start the clutch and fuel timers). It bunny hopped off the line and he looked like a crash test dummy, arms flapping around the cockpit unable to grip the steering wheel

Vanquish S was an option and didn't supersede the standard Vanquish.
