Disposing of a car after a one way journey.

Considering the old maxim that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and all that, I’ve accepted an offer on my current car with which I’m happy with from a friend of a friend.

I’m happy I’ve sold now as I got the price I wanted and didn’t have to advertise it and deal with all the hassle with tyre kickers etc, etc. I’m also hopefully that the second hand car market might take a downturn towards the end of the year and I might get more for my money.

The car I’m looking at replacing the old one with is quite specialist and there are only a few on the market at the moment. Nothing takes my fancy or is in budget.

The money will sit in the bank for the next few months until the right car turns up.

In the meantime, I’m going to find a cheap banger to smoke about in. Something with a long MOT for circa £500. In true bangernomics style, I’m going to spend little or no money on the car.

Looking ahead, when the right car pops up for me to buy as my permanent car, I’m planning on using the banger on a one way trip to view/collect the new main car. I’m up north and most of the prospective cars I’ve seen have been down south.

Once there, I’ll need to dispose of the banger. I’m not bothered about recouping my £500 outlay. I’d just want to get shot of it on the day.

So, what would be the quickest and easiest way of getting rid? Call up a few scrapyards ahead of my arrival? See if any backstreet garages want it for the price of some petrol? Advertise as a free car to someone needy on a local FB group?

Seriously... to dispose the car you either have to sell/give it away but someone needs to be the new keeper or you have to scrap it and a certificate of destruction for the DVLA. I would just take a train or plane down depending where you going and a taxi and be done. It will probably set you back £300 but if it’s such a specialist car should be worth it for you?

Maybe We Buy Any Car. I think you have to book an appointment in advance but they advertise they will buy it then and there.

Advertise car on ebay for 99p with sale conditional on the buyer driving you to collect your new car. Someone will be happy to make the round trip for a free car.

I looked at MOT history for this......regularly fails ,yet seller says " serviced by my brother , a keen mechanic "

seems pretty wasteful to buy a running car for cheap, only to scrap it at the end of the day when someone looking for a cheap car could buy that and potentially get better use out of it.

If you find the car you're after in Kent, I would be open to buying the cheap old banger off you. If it's any good I'll sell it on myself for a small profit. If it's a steaming heap of turd just leave it at my address and arrange for CarTakeBack to pick it up. Scrap values are quite high at the moment; about £150 for a mid-sized family hatchback.

this is PH, you're meant to threaten him with legal action saying he sold you a piece of junk for £100. He'll then make a thread asking 'should i be worried' with the usual buyer beware responses.

Just to clarify, I’m going to be running this banger for at least a month. Perhaps until after Xmas.

I just don’t want the hassle of having two cars to deal with when the permanent one pops up for sale.

I just want to be able to swap the insurance over from the banger to the new car on the same day and then get rid of the banger.

I’m not averse to giving it to someone for free when the time comes. It all depends on what area the new car pops up in.

I will of course keep this thread updated.

I'd be willing to drive you to your new car in your banger and then take it off your hands if that would work for you?

Just sell it to a scrap merchant, if the car has some life left in it you can be sure it won’t actually be scrapped but will be remarketed. You’ll probably get £50 or so which may cover the fuel to collect the new car.

Price of scrap cars is decent at the moment, just got £150 each for an octavia and a passat that were only fit to be run over the scales, so you will have no problems offloading it as long as you turn up to your destination at a sensible time.
