Is this a scam or.....

.....just someone being a bit thick? A few months ago I had a pair of speakers for sale on ebay and was contacted by a guy in Germany who said he'd like to buy them. He asked if he could pay via paypal and then have his son who lives in the UK come and pick them to which I said absolutely not a chance, if his son is collecting then he pays cash on collection, however, after speaking with the guy on the phone I agree he can pay via paypal as he seems very genuine and he says he'll pay as soon as we get off the phone but after the phonecall there is no payment and I hear nothing, until yesterday...
Yesterday I get a message from the guy in Germany saying that his son is having trouble finding the time to come and pick up the speakers but he should be able to do it in the next week or two, I message him back (via ebay) saying that as he never paid and I haven't heard from him I've removed the speaker cones from the cabinets and sold them to someone else. I get a very arsey reply from him saying that they were his speakers, I shouldn't have done that and I need to refund his money straight away, I reply asking when he made the payment and to confirm that my paypal address is where he actually sent the money. I have another arsey reply whereby he's adamant it's my paypal the money's gone too but he still doesn't say when he made the payment, he does say that if I put the speaker cones back in the cabinets he'll come and pick them up personally! I've messaged him again stating I've received no payment and asked again when he made the payment but haven't heard back yet.
So, I'm unsure what to think, is this;
A, Some kind of scam?
B, an idiot who's made the payment to the wrong paypal account and either doesn't realise it or perhaps now does realise but as they've sent a couple of arsey messages to me saying I've got their money they're now going along with it to see if they can get anything back off me for their mistake?
C, or has the guy in Germany asked someone else to make the payment on his behalf and they've said they've made the payment when they haven't?
Any thoughts?
