I have it in mind that I need a dress watch on a strap and the Calatrava springs to mind.

I quite like the look of crown guards, which has led me to the 5127.

I know little of Pateks; is that a good choice?

Calatravas are elegant understated pieces. Not bulky or heavy. I have a 5117J which I enjoy wearing.

Also the Patek GC watches are stunning engineering art, all hand made. One of the finer things in life if you are lucky enough to afford it, but don't like to bring attention to yourself. Leave that to the Breitling and Rolex wearers with polished surfaces which catch the light.

YOLO. So buy one if you think wearing it will bring you joy.

Lovely.

I have a 5227G and it's (in my opinion) a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Very discreet and always brings a smile to my face.

Ah. I fancy the J model - yellow gold. But I now realise that I may need one like yours too. Very smart.

Absolutely. Old rollers attract a different crowd and are ubiquitous like the classic Golf GTI advert. Much more subtle than the bling new rolls and leaves enough mystery about just how powerful the owner might be.

Like Pateks, old rollers are fine engineering art.....and are best enjoyed when kept properly.

The date window makes my teeth itch on them, they always look like they made the window just a tad too small for the date itself, and then said "Ah fk it, that'll do."

I hadn't noticed that.

I'd better check that I can read it.

I had lens replacement surgery on my eyes a few years ago. It has been brilliant, but my near vision is about where it was 2 years into presbyopia. I can JUST ABOUT read the date on a Tank Francaise with the light in the right direction.

Yes.

You can't really go wrong with such a watch - you're also creating an heirloom. Beautifully made and if you happen to dress for dinner - it's the perfect choice! smile

My eyes are crap, I can't read the date very well on any watch. Haha

What I mean is, for some reason I always think they didn't make the date window big enough for the font used on the wheel.

Almost like the font is too tall for the window...

I know what you mean. Perhaps it's a case of "look how accurately we can make the numbers fit in the little window".
