I need some help. I have my 10th wedding anniversary coming up and I would like to take my 355 to France so I enjoy the car and the wife enjoys a nice chateaux ( hopefully !) I don't really want to travel more than 200 miles from either Le Harve / Caen /Cherbourg. I know the Ferrari OC used to do a trip, so can anybody recommend a chateaux that they have stayed at ??

I cross France often and use another network, it is not Relais et Chateaux, but chateaux & hotels, it is very good, maybe not as good as relaischateaux though, stayed in the one near Alencon (Chateaux St Pattern), it was great, check at

There are some great chateaux near Reims and Honfleur. However, not all rooms are that good. Email me offline if you would like some help.

This place was lovely after Le Mans - only 4 rooms but all are very nice. Ask for one with a bath though as they are stunning (ours had a shower only - the only room without a bath).

Very friendly chaps run it with lots to talk about. We had dinner in the garden instead of with the owners/other guests which was very nice.

Tell them Max and Claire sent you.

If you want an easy way to impress your partner - take a drive through the Champagne revions around Eperney - and go visit the big champagne houses which do swanky cellar tours.

We spent the New Year here www.chateau-de-la-motte.net/uk/index.htm

Book the Knights Room if you can, also Marie Andre is a superb cook.

I'd agree with this.

I've stayed in both, and I reckon the Chateaux & Hotels ones have more character, are cheaper and have better food.

I'd suggest looking around the North East of Paris, or the Loire valley. All doable within a couple of hours, and lovely places to visit.

PS Couple of examples that I've used:

www.chateauxhotels.com/public/fiche_hotel/index.php?id=2545

The latters only 45mins or so drive from the Chunnel (if that). But a good jump off point for seeing a lot in the area...

Mal,

We had a pre Le Mans jaunt with other halves and also stayed at the Moulin de Villeray. We stayed in the main house which was fantastic as there were only about 10 people staying in the rambling huge Chateaux.

In fact having spent the evning drinking and eating in the Moulin; we were given the key by the owners and told to lock up on our return.

If my translating skills stand up I'm sure the owner was telling me that the Jaguar Team used to stay here during the Le Mans week in the past

Would recommend for a stay but bear in mind that this is not a 5 star hotel. More of an experience and fun. If you are wanting luxury unsurpassed then look elsewhere

Agreed, but that is so of most of the French Chateau Hotels - style, traditional unpretensious sophistication and good French food are more the key rather than pure luxury and facilities in the modern sense
