Scary stuff. Track circuits have been around for what, 150 years?

Not the only one of these in that part of Suffolk.

The guy who caused this accident is the father of an old school friend of mine

ok thats a different situation
Surely the 'cause' is more to do with the operating method of the crossing
“The sign said ‘stop, look and listen’, which of course he did, but failed to read the very small print instructing him to use the phone.
It highlights custom and practice - most people dont use the phone if they can see the track is clear. if it isnt clear they dont cross smile
“More signage has since been put up. Crossings tend to have audio and visual warnings, and are not manually controlled like this one, which must be one of the last of its kind.

The article is stretching the point where it says
“His car struck a passenger train travelling to Melton station at a speed of 30-40mph,”
as plainly the train struck the car - the train didnt have much opportunity to avoid!

In the opening post we're talking about where the signal box was overloaded and a mistake made but no checking procedure applied

I can vividly remember going to work with my father in the early eighties-picking up a load of potatoes in his artic from the isle of Thanet in Kent-the level crossing was a self use affair-you had to pump up the gates manually-cross the line ,then drop them behind you!!
