My accountant prepared my company's last set of annual accounts back in February, which came out at a loss for the year and he said I could reclaim some corp tax from previous years profit. He allegedly contacted HMRC to claim it for me back in March.

I just remembered about it the other day, and realised that I've not received the refund from HMRC yet. So I phoned my accountant to check that he'd submitted the claim and ask how long it should take to receive. His wife answered the phone and informed me that he's died! Cue a slightly awkward and apologetic conversation. He didn't sound in the greatest of health back in February, but told me that he'd got a bad back. With hindsight I suspect he knew then that things were far more serious, so I'm a bit miffed he didn't let me know.

I asked her about retrieving paperwork relating to my business's accounts, he worked from home, and it's all been kept there. She doesn't sound particularly 'with it' herself, and so far I've been passed around to various people who are supposedly dealing with his business matters. Apparently his daughter wrote to all the clients months ago to let them know, and sort out returning the paper records. I definitely didn't get a letter though, and so far his daughter hasn't replied to my email. He has a couple of years worth of bank statements, and whatever notes he kept on my business accounts preparation. I presume new accountant is going to want as much historical info as possible, especially for depreciation calcs etc?

So I'm going to need a new accountant asap. But in the meantime, can I chase Corp tax refund myself? I'm registered for online corp tax services with HMRC, but that're showing nothing for the accounting period concerned. Should it show a negative amount on there, or does it not work like that?

Simple answer is, contact HMRC and explain the situation to them. You should have authority as you are director of the company. Just make sure you have all the correct CT identification and references to hand.
