My son is looking to get power pedals and has decided on these, after reading various reviews.

It would need to be the one-sided power versions, due to fiscal constraints. However there appears to be two options for this one-sided option:
1) where you get the left power pedal and ‘dumb’ right pedal.
2) where you just get the left power pedal, nothing else.

Option 2 is a lot cheaper (if you already have Look Keos to use as your right pedal, which he does).

Can anyone confirm if this would work on its own, as the marketing description doesn’t make it clear if it’s just a replacement part?

It'll work fine. The right pedal is 'dumb' as you suggested. I've used the Assioma Uno and also the previous model, the BePro. Both work very well, the Assioma is just a bit easier to set up.
I bought mine from Mantel. They are based in the Netherlands and were the cheapest by far. Delivery and tracking were excellent.

I've got the Duo pedals - sourced mine from https://www.cyclepowermeters.com/ as I wanted UK support (over the cheapest possible price). Excellent service from them pre-sale (eg e-mail answered at 20:45).

Thanks Harpoon, will get my son to have a look there too. Interesting they state that the factory has reopened but stock likely to be scarce for rest of 2020. Most online places do appear to be out of stock.

You should get a dummy pedal with the single sided.

Using a different pedal may upset your fit as the Assioma have a slightly wider Q factor and stack height compared to a normal Look Pedal.

Rather than a look one, I'd look at getting the Xpedo pedals. they are the bodies that the Assioma use.

As I understand the three options you can buy are

1 - Dual sided
2 - Single sided - left side is a power pedal and the right side is an identical dumb pedal
3 - Upgrade - a right power pedal to go with the left side you already own - upgrades single sided to dual.

Pretty sure they don't sell a left pedal and you supply your own right pedal - non matching pedals are surely an injury waiting to happen.

Here’s the single left pedal I mentioned in the OP:

I think the left pedal on it's own is for if you break or damage your existing left pedal- you don't get the charger either, which iirc uses a funny moon shaped magnetic connector on the pedal end.

Cyclepowermeters.com sell the charger for almost £30, so that plus the "spare" single pedal comes to £405. At which point buy the Uno kit for £410 from CPM and avoid all the faff!

If you buy the Uno you should get both pedals.

One will have the pod (the left) and the right will be a dummy.

Their website clearly states that!:

Package content:
Left pedal with power sensor
Right pedal without power sensor
Battery charger including plugs (EU, US, UK, AU)
1 two-meter long micro-USB/USB cable with magnetic connector
2 red cleats float 6° (LOOK Kéo compatible)
Hex key and 4 washers for the installation
