Not sure if it's anyone on here, but I saw an E61 M5 yesterday somewhere between Aachen and Calais, and it looked like he was hyper-miling - doing about 50mph about 10ft from the back of a truck.

Now, I know that you can't stop in France or Belgium to re-fuel, but I would have thought that even a V10 M5 could make Calais at a steady 80mph after a final fill-up in Aachen.

I didn’t realise that - is it the case that if you did have to stop and fuel in those countries you’d have to declare this and comply with self isolation requirements etc?

Not that I’m planning a trip any time soon...

Apologies - of course you CAN stop in France or Belgium to re-fuel if you want to, but in theory you then have no option but to "mingle" with unclean folks and as a result will have to quarantine for 2 weeks when you get home. However, it doesn't look like anyone is asking the question, never mind doing any actual checks, so the entire thing is a bit of a farce anyway.

Owning an E63 M6, which is about 150kg lighter than the E61 M5 i don't think I ever saw 300 miles out of a tank. Obtaining 18mpg on a run was good going.

220miles from Aachen to Calais might be on the edge in a fully laden touring.

Agree... I had one of those when they were first produced. The combination of serious thirst and a small tank was killer. I was getting about 10 MPG in the city, and 18 required some very relaxed driving. Great engine though!

I used to do something similar along the A14 to pass the time (dual carriage way, chock-a-block with HGVs) when I used to have a regular Derby / Cambridge commute, 30 mpg was easily achievable at 60mph with a gentle right foot. Would easily get 300+ miles out of a tank and our semi-regular jaunts over to Anglesey would return 24/25mpg with the family in the car.

The E60 M5 is the only car where I had a 10 litre reserve tank permanently residing in the boot - the 70 litre fuel tank was pitiful, 100 litres would have been more adequate.

You can fill up without any issues. No-one will ever check and it doesn't matter.

I'm pretty sure refuelling is allowed if you're transiting a country. If you have a Maccies meal, go sightseeing and pick up a hitchhiker, then fair enough, but just refuelling & paying for it? Of course the rules don't specifically say that, but common sense does.

Love it!

Got to ask: were you desperately conserving fuel, or is it the same every journey? smile

And how did you find this thread? I hope you always drive the same way and then scoure the Internet after every drive in the hope of finding someone who has commented on you smile

Excellent!

And having seen your other post showing the car on track, I assume fuel conservation isn't a top priority for you. Unless you were pootling around there too hehe

Got to be one of the least likely hyper-milers ever.

Brilliant - I thought it might be someone on here. I was the bloke that passed you in a black Maserati Gran Cabrio. We were also 2 hours early for our booked train, but I'd paid for FlexPlus because it was only about £30 more than the basic fare (switched from Ferry to Tunnel whilst we were away, definitely paid peak pricing for the tunnel)
