From the past - C90 cassette album pairs

I'm guessing this is only going to get replies from those of us over the age of about 40...

What albums did you pair when filling up a C90 cassette? These are the albums you always listened to all the way through as it was better than just rewinding one side

I can remember putting

Van Halen 1984 with Bon Jovi Bon Jovi,
Iron Maiden Somewhere in Time with WASP - Inside the Electric Circus
Portishead - Dummy with KLF - The White Room

Growing up, I remember...

Camel - The Single Factor with Judie Tzuke - Welcome to the Cruise
Nazareth - The Fool Circle with Thin Lizzy - Black Rose (with a little bit of Solo in Soho cos there was some tape left )
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams with Styx - Kilroy was Here
Gerry Rafferty - City to City with Genesis - And then there were three (neither album fit into 45 mins...)

I can still remember most of the words to just about all the songs on those albums - for better or worse!

Mix tapes.

I used to hunt out the C46s (about the right length for single albums usually), then copy a cassette from a mate and photocopy the inlay. Professional level. Sometimes C60s were needed for a longer playing, er, long player.

C90s were for double albums only.

1980s was my time for cassettes on the bus with my Sanyo personal stereo and later on the Philips deck in my 205, so:

Robbie Robertson - Robbie Robertson / Daniel Lanois - Acadie

Level 42 - World Machine (LP version) / Level 42 - Running in the Family

Fleetwood Mac - Tango in the Night / Talking Heads - Little Creatures

Roxy Music - Flesh + Blood / Roxy Music - Avalon

Peter Gabriel - So (LP version) / Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring (...tape would run out as the last track was fading out....)

Robert Palmer - Riptide / Bryan Ferry - Boys and Girls

Ha ha, I was ruminating over this on holiday last week. We have a retro Eriba caravan which came fitted with a Pioneer auto-reverse (get me!) tape deck, so I have dug out a load of my old mix tapes from a bin bag in the loft. I've actually been on eBay and bought a retro briefcase style tape carrier - remember them?

Favourite:

Side A: Sleeper - Smart
Side B: Dodgy - Homegrown

C90s weren't just for double albums - I put Ziggy Stardust on one side and Hunky Dory on the other so I could listen to them in the car.

If you hunted them out, you could pick up C100 tapes which did the job perfectly..

I found some of mine recently that had been done by a friend at the time - no particular pairings though, just what we were swapping back then.

That does ring a vague bell now you mention it. My hunting only extended to finding the cheapest packs of TDK AD & later SA!

I played this C90 to death in my early teens. Still two of the most complete albums I can think of.

Slightly O/T but I used to record the Friday night hip hop stuff from Radio 1 mid 80's (days before Kiss afaik) on to cassette. Good times.

All my home tapes were of records I had actually bought on vinyl, but wanted to play on cassette in the car so I didn't see the problem with that, although my pal who used to work in anti-piracy tells me this is/was still technically illegal. Meh.

Back in the 70s in Bristol there was a cassette library where you could hire up to 8 per week for very little money. I used to copy any that I liked before returning them.

And if you disapprove of that, a few years later CDs came out, so I probably bought most of those albums eventually.

When I put two albums on each C90 though, I don't remember applying any logic to the pairings, it was just whichever two happened to be next. (Although a friend did find it amusing that I put the Hollies on the same one as Buddy Holly. Well it was how they got their name after all.)

My pairings weren’t always logical.
I often recall the story to my A level music class that on my paper round in the 80’s I used to listen to music.
On one side Iron Maiden ‘powerslave’, on the other Janet Jackson ‘control’!

Same here. SAX were my favourite as my paper round money increased! MAX if I was really going for it. I’ve still got a few of those, really heavy!
