Hi guys

Like many of you, I've been running in my Boxster GTS4.0 over the last month. I'm at 1250 miles, so only 600 to go. I'm then planning to raise from 4000rpm max to 7800 over the next 1000 miles or so in roughly 1000 rpm intervals. When that is done (I'm hoping in the next 3-4 weeks), I'm wanting to get an OPC oil change service.

When I had the factory new engine fitted to my old 981s in late 2017, Reading's oil change service was charged at £330 inc VAT. I assume that was drain oil, replace oil filter, refil with Mobil 1.

I have just been give a quote of £540 inc VAT for the oil change service on the GTS 4.0. This is more than the last minor service I had on the 981s in late 2019 and feels like a punch in the stomach. I know OPCs and Reading in particular are expensive, but this doesn't seem right. I questioned the difference and was told that the servicing for the GTS 4.0 (which wasn't even out last week) has now been released and the hours for the GTS 4.0 are 1.57 and that the £540 is correct. Surely the work is identical. Do you think they are inflating the GTS 4.0 costs deliberately ?

Thoughts ?

Perhaps it’s harder to get at the oil filter in the new car. I assume as it’s a totally different version from your old 981 that maybe the procedure is also totally different.

However, it is a ridiculous cost for a simple job.

An "interim" oil change seems sensible, especially if you are planning on being a long term keeper. At 540 from an OPC seems a massive p1ss take (imo).

The only tricky / messy part seems to be the oil filter removal:

I’d expect that the extra time is for taking the some additional underfloor panels off, and or maybe the filter is in a new location...harder to reach for the new 4.0 engine.

Sorry!!

I considered one for my GT4 and was advised by my OPC that it wasn't worth it, so they essentially turned down the work. Unless you're hard on your car e.g track use, the normal service interval is fine.

My view is that if Porsche thought it was worth doing they'd advise as such and add it to the service schedule.

And the extra cost is indeed to remove the floor covers, it's all extra time in the workshop.

I was quoted £380 by my OPC, I had it done by my local Indy for £280 which included £145 for oil as they were not keen on my supplying correct oil at £95 from Opie (all inc VAT). The Indy has been very helpful to me over the last few years and with the CV hit they've taken and all that I'm not going to argue over £50 at the moment.

Id say this as well. The cars at Pec arent run in and hammered once up to temp .
Only oil change they get is when the are released for sale

I saw the video of the 2.5GTS posted a little while ago (thanks for that). Quite unbelievable. We'll be having to drop engines to do oil change before long. I wonder if the filter in the 4.0 is even harder still ? No (as the guy in the video said) huge turbo to contend with, but a bigger block.

I know there is a lot of debate about run in. I'm planning on keeping this for 10+ years, so if there is any chance a run in of 1800-2000 miles with clean oil after improves long term health of the engine, I'll do it.

To be paying twice as much for an oil change than a full service used to cost for my Supra Turbo hurts though and 30% more than my E36 328 sport major service - in fact, more for an oil change than any full service I've ever had except the 981s .. astounding.

Thanks for all your input.

Post run-in oil change on my 718 GT4 cost me CHF750 so looks like Porsche may be increasing their price for this now.

For something like an oil change just use an indy. I do that on the years a service isn't due on my 981S, and normally supply my own Mobil 1.

If it's outside of the Porsche service intervals then do it at an indy using a Porsche oil filter. It won't show as having missed anything, and as long as you keep the receipt and document it all there rather than in the service book, how would they know ?

RPM charged £300 for an oil change at 1200 miles on my GT3 IIRC.

I paid £319 at my OPC for post running in oil change on my GTS4.0, and they also checked it out prior to doing its first track day.
They also filled tyres with nitrogen FOC.

It’s not really an excuse for the price, but the new 4.0 engine uses a new oil - ESP X3 - because of the filters. It’s a little more expensive than the more common Mobil oil.

Can you let me know which OPC ?

It was Leeds. I asked them just to change oil and filter, and not do a full minor service.

Yes, just checked Porsche Swindon - they have fixed price and are £300inc for oil (checked and it is the ESP X3 oil mentioned above) and filter change. Obviously Reading aren't part of that fixed price group of OPCs.

Almost half the price !

I live in Reading but use Brooklands for servicing as I find Reading's pricing far and away the most expensive relatively to all the other OPCs.

East London also significantly cheaper and have used them instead of Reading also. Bit of a trek but I work in Canary Wharf so easy excuse.

As others have said, if this is over and above the service schedule, then use an independent. But using genuine parts.

The quote you had, was close to robbery and should have been delivered by a guy wearing a mask and a bag marked “swag”
