Anyone use Roostermoney or similar pre paid card for their kids?

I'd like to have a payment card for my 14 year old son to use, instead of giving him cash when he goes out with his pals. Would any of them allow him to use it to pay for things contactlessly on his iPhone, or would he always need to have the card with him? I guess that would need him to link it to Apple Pay, which as a child he can't do?

I think Rooster card allows me to top up his card up to ten times per month, free of charge, whereas Go Henry charges 50p each time.

Any other recommendations please?

Isn't that just a normal bank card, would it allow him to go overdrawn?

I want his savings to remain where they are, and just have a card for spending money with probably no more than £20 on the card at any one time. Then I want to be able to top up his balance instantly from my phone when he needs £5 or £10 adding, and for him to only be able to spend up to the amount of credit that's on his card, without being able to go overdrawn.

Childrens' accounts don't have an overdraft facility. Who do you bank with?

Get a revolut account and he will be able to add it to his google pay.

Revolut is brilliant because you can use it in multiple currencies and use it abroad without charges etc.

I use Go Henry for my youngest - you can top up Your parent account once a month for free and then transfer to the card with no extra charges. It is very simple and I get an alert every time he makes a purchase plus I can set a max spending limit. Works fine for me

I'm assuming the OP is. His Son could have the card set up on his Google pay.

Just been on their website and they have a junior account from age 7-17, looks very interesting. I am after something similar so will investigate further, looks like the adult needs an account too though which is linked.

Yes, but would you bloody believe that the junior card cannot be linked to apple/google pay - basically the only way teenagers want to pay for anything nowadays. Epic fail by revolut

My kids have Lloyd’s accounts, which come with a debit card and no overdraft facility. I did look at GoHenry hut the monthly charge was a bit off putting.
Both kids appear to have got theIt Lloyds card working on Apple Pay.

That seems a bit daft, but why not set up an account for yourself and then put those card details on your sons google pay?

You don't pay anything to set up a revolut account, unless you want the physical card, at least that's how it worked when I set mine up.

This is how I still do it, but the kids want access to see how much cash they have available, which is why I got the junior cards, only to find out they were next to useless.

Can you access the same account on multiple phones via the app? This way they could log in to the account and see the balance?

What are my options for him to be able to use his iPhone to make contactless purchases? Guessing he would need to use Apple Pay?

I don't want to simply get a debit card for his existing bank account as I don't want him knowing how much savings he has (surprise for when he's older) so I reckon I would need to open up another kids bank account that gives him a debit card that I can link to Apple Pay? Then I would add £5 or £10 to the account when needed.

The problem is, whilst he always has his phone with him, he might forget to take his bank card with him. Plus, if I transfer £10 from my account to his using my iPhone, it might take a few hours to get to his account, I'd like it to be instant. Imagine he's about to go out and I want him to have £5 credit, I want it to transfer immediately. I also want us both to be able to quickly glance at an app and both see how much credit he has, so we know if he has enough. I guess thats where Rooster Money and Go Henry work well?

Another option I guess is to have a Rooster or Go Henry card tucked into his iPhone case so he can do contactless purchases. That way I can release money instantly from the 'parent holding' section to his 'spending' section of the app, and we can both easily see how much he has.

I'm surprised banks don't do something like this for kids, allowing them and parent to easily check balance and release money instantly. They could charge and undercut Rooster & Go Henry and sweep up.

I've been looking at all the cards suggested and none of them do all I'm looking for. I want no overdraft, a physical card, an app so I see realtime transactions, ability to freeze the card if thought to be lost, low fees.

I've decided to give my daughter my Monzo card which I only ever use when travelling, it does everything I need with none of the restrictions the other cards impose. I'll review next year when things have hopefully changed.

All of these are possible with revolut.

You also have the option to switch on/off other settings;

ATM withdrawals
Contactless payments
Swipe payments
GPS based security
Online payments
