cheap thrills?

Hi all,
so, back again.....asking the same bloody question....sorry
anyway, we've been looking for caravelles and to be honest they're perfect for what we want long term - just out of reach price wise until we add to the savings.
to paint the picture, 6 months ago I had a company car and the wife had the XC60 for going to and from work.
Now, I have a new job, work from home and she's on maternity. So my company car went back and we share the XC, now that's...ok....ish.... but I do have to go to the office at times and that leaves her with no transport, and I've had my own car since I was 18, i'm finding it increasingly hard not having a car of my own.
So we'd thought, having the caravelle means we can load that up with the dog cage, another baby seat and any time we go out as a group we use that, and other times we use the XC and keep that as the "nice" car.
That's fine but I don't want to spend £20k at the moment.
Which means having a rethink.
I've looked at 7 seaters to do the same job and they just won't do it. So i'm not hoping you all can help think of a different route.
We think perhaps something smaller would suffice, keep the cage etc in the XC and then when we want to nip to the shop or I need to go to the office I can take the small car and leave the XC with the wife knowing everything is in it already.
Which means.....WHAT CAR!!!!
I don't care too much about type of fuel, or economy to a certain extent. I'm hoping for something nice to drive on the 3 hour return trip to the office, but exciting on just a normal drive when I need to go to the shops.
still want 4 door as the lad will still go in it.
not against an estate or hatch but definitely not a saloon as there might be an odd occassion where the dog will be in the boot but that will be really rare.
I want to keep my spend below £5000
my current thoughts:
Focus ST - anything but orange! I still need to go to offices and can't really arrive in a beacon.
Mondeo ST220 - estate or hatch. I think Estate would be the most usefull.
BMW 530i - some do fall within budget in either estate or saloon, but as above, the saloon would be a pain in the ass
